It's confirmed - he's resigning April 19.

That'll be before Ken Buck's successor is seated...how many seats is the R majority down to then?

The Republicans just straight-up giving away the majority mid-term would be the funniest little capper to this whole era.

It’s even worse than that as he timed his departure in a way to ensure that there would be no special election to fill his vacancy

It will be 217-214 after the NY-26 winner is seated.

This'll mean Mike Johnson can only afford 1 defection before he'll need to start relying on Democratic votes to govern.

217-213 as of April 19th. Goes to 217-214 on April 30th, but a slew of GOP specials from late May through late June will have it back up to 220-214 by July. The really really tight 217-214 period will only last three weeks.

A lot of Republicans are just not on board with that the shell for MAGA that the GOP has become, and it seems resgning is their only way to regain their freedom. Another bad sign for Trump.

Three weeks can be a very long time in politics... it's going to be an interesting month.

Ugh, one of my fav House members, too.

Hey House historian peeps: have we ever had a hung House, where neither party has a ruling majority (if that's even possible)?

Sometime in 1931 seems like:

And in the 1850s absolutely:

The closest I think would be in the 1850s when America briefly was an actual multiparty system. Several speaker elections took multiple ballots including the infamous 1855-1856 election that had 133 ballots before they relented to a plurality vote.

1. Because the depression up to that point was just a recession and it looked like the economy was recovering too . It wasn’t until the Bank of the United States collapsed along with a lot of other banks did the Great Depression really begin . The collapse of that bank happened in November of 1930

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_of_United_States#

https://www.federalreservehistory.org/essays/banking-panics-1930-31#

2. Eugene Meyer only became the head of the federal reserve in September 1930 so much if the damage he’d cause hadn’t happened by the midterms

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Republican majority gets smaller by another seat. You're hereby advised to repare your popcorn machine.

I wouldn't be surprised to see one or two more resignations before the fall. Kay Granger announced today that she's stepping down as Chair of House Appropriations. It's not far fetched to see her resign rather than stick around in a do-nothing Congress for several more months.

Especially if MTG succeeds with her motion to remove Johnson. Honestly, they wouldn't be able to elect a new speaker again with an even tighter majority. It would turn into complete chaos. If a unity speaker also fails, maybe some more Republican lawmakers who actually prefered to govern might just be done with it then and get out.

Buck and now Gallagher.
It could be a planned wave of resignations to hand Jeffries the Speakership.

Which would explain why the GOP forfeited the Santos seat.
