217-213 as of April 19th. Goes to 217-214 on April 30th, but a slew of GOP specials from late May through late June will have it back up to 220-214 by July. The really really tight 217-214 period will only last three weeks.

The closest I think would be in the 1850s when America briefly was an actual multiparty system. Several speaker elections took multiple ballots including the infamous 1855-1856 election that had 133 ballots before they relented to a plurality vote.

1. Because the depression up to that point was just a recession and it looked like the economy was recovering too . It wasn’t until the Bank of the United States collapsed along with a lot of other banks did the Great Depression really begin . The collapse of that bank happened in November of 1930

I wouldn't be surprised to see one or two more resignations before the fall. Kay Granger announced today that she's stepping down as Chair of House Appropriations. It's not far fetched to see her resign rather than stick around in a do-nothing Congress for several more months.

Especially if MTG succeeds with her motion to remove Johnson. Honestly, they wouldn't be able to elect a new speaker again with an even tighter majority. It would turn into complete chaos. If a unity speaker also fails, maybe some more Republican lawmakers who actually prefered to govern might just be done with it then and get out.
