I think I would've fit in well with the Dems prior to the 1990's. But as of particular ones; 3-time presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan is my idea for a model politician, while I have great respect for Senator Mark Hatfield as well.

He's just a bland Republican who was born on the wrong side of the border. He's not even moderate, he's a fan of Trump and Viktor Orban nowadays. Even though he had to play it smart in Canada, maybe that's why he was never that popular of a PM and only won a bare majority against a collapsing wreck of a Liberal Party after failing three times first.

Okay.  He managed the economy reasonably well but did some dumb things like GST cut.  He was more a transactional PM much like Chretien not a transformational like Mulroney, both Trudeaus.  He made some changes but they were not massive and in terms of hard unpopular decisions didn't do that many.  I guess raising OAS age to 67 was probably best example of that, but Trudeau reversed it so its not like will remembered for it.  I would put him in middle of the pack being better than Justin Trudeau and also Pierre Trudeau too but worse than Mulroney and Chretien.

Do you mean he was a 'transitional' P.M? I'm not sure what you mean by transactional.

I've heard of political leaders described as either transformational or transitional.

I agree that Harper saw himself as a 'transitional' Prime Minister in that his own motto was something like "every day the Liberals are out of power, Canada is a little less liberal."

Of course, for what will likely be 10 years, that didn't prove to be the case.

In terms of Harper's performance on economics, these things compound so it took a while to notice (actually years after it should have been first noticed) but Canada's struggle with increasing real GDP per capita (AKA productivity) started somewhere around 2000, so, occurred under the entire duration of the Harper government. So, to the degree that the government is to blame for this, Harper deserves as much blame as Justin Trudeau.

Like Tony Benn, he's a relatively rare example of someone who became more radical/extreme/ideological/whatever word you want to use after having a career in frontline politics.

I am not sure what you mean by this. Harper is not that praiseful of Trump or Orban. He is not seen as a Trump/Orban equivalent in Canada, by conservatives or liberals.
