I’m sure it will all be butterflies and rainbows. 🙄
Serious question, though.
Dark Brandon has SEAL Team Six execute Trump, after which Kamala Harris declares him President for Life. /s
Serious answer: Presuming that by "the left" you mean, roughly, "people who think Biden is a centrist moderate but will vote for him anyway" (only one of many possible definitions), I think the reaction would depend on the shape of a "Trump win"*. From most to least likely:
Questionable Trump Win*
If Donald Trump is technically elected President as the result of highly contested results (possibly after a heated vote in the House or even more legally and constitutionally questionable shenanigans) the left gets motivated and angry.
There are immense protests (and yes, violence and property damage - I wouldn't want to be leasing property to
RepublicanMAGA HQ - that does no good) demanding Trump's resignation in favor of the VP-elect, among other things. There's a storm of lawsuits that dwarfs 2020. Crazy ideas abound on the internet, and actual politicians start talking about them (such as Congress impeaching Trump, which doesn't actually succeed, even if the House votes for it). Blue state governors and legislatures stop short of anything like secession, but start issuing declarations, resolutions, and even passing laws to signal their displeasure with and opposition to the not-yet-in-office Trump administration. There's a surge in left-wing militias, or at least interest in them.
Solid Trump Win*
If Donald Trump truly wins a majority in the Electoral College, the left will rage, angst, and mourn.
Talking heads will say stupid things. Hare-brained schemes will be floated, and there will be protests and demands for secession that will amount to nothing, for good or for ill. (A handful of the usual suspects will do some property damage, and
RepublicansMAGATs will scream how it is worse than January 6th. It won't be.) There will be a lot of "I'm leaving the country" from people who do not, in fact, leave the country. There's a lot of complaining about Biden, the Democratic Party, and the two-party system. There's a strong uptick in interest in, and discussion of, left-wing revolutionary movements and how to live in a police state.
Successful Trump Coup*
If Donald Trump is declared President in open defiance of the voters of an Electoral College majority of states and established institutions fail to respond effectively, the left goes insane.
Many things that otherwise only enter the realm of discussion (and even then by only a small fraction of the left) start being taken seriously. Mass protests are just the start. There are also strikes, riots, and obvious terrorist attacks on
RepublicanMAGA targets. Establishment talking heads utterly fail to connect with the left-leaning public. The internet is nearing meltdown. The lame-duck Biden administration (along with Democratic politicians) are in a no-win situation: either they are targeted by the left for trying to stop the violence and calls for extremist action, or they become accomplices to illegal acts that the incoming Trump administration will punish them for. Deep blue states see credible calls for, and movement toward, secession. Internal migration to anti-Trump states and leaving the country start to get serious consideration. There are one (or several) public revolutionary left-wing movements with rapidly growing membership.
*Donald Trump is an insurrectionist who cannot constitutionally hold the office of President. The recent (worthless) Roberts Court decision did not dispute this, it just admitted they were going to let him stay on ballots anyway.
