For their own interests (and IMO the interests of the country and GOP), it is more beneficial if Trump loses. For those with 2028 ambition, it is quite clear. Maybe R legislators who would not face competitive elections would prefer Trump to win.

I don't think many in the GOP like Trump aside from the bootlickers like Gaetz/MTG, but the GOP has enabled the MAGA monster so now it is stuck with it until voters vanquish it at the ballot box.

Privately, definitely not.

Though Kemp has the least to lose by overtly not being too kean on Trump.

No because they want to set up a 2028 run and Trump winning hurts R’s chances in ‘28

If anything they’re privately rooting for Trump to lose, as the GOP would basically be doomed for 2028.

Also a Trump loss would lead to possible 2026 Senate opportunities for Kemp and Youngkin which would be far less viable if he won.

Yes.

If Trump loses, they are more likely to be the nominee in 2028.

If Trump wins, the 2028 nominee will be Trump's VP or whichever ally of his that he endorses. Possibly one of his kids. And it won't be DeSantis, Youngkin, or Kemp that Trump props up.

No, they don't. But this has less to do with them caring about the direction of the GOP and more about them having a better shot in 2028 if Trump loses.

I think a lot of Republicans do secretly hope that he loses. Look at how disastrous their opposition to Biden has been purely because of Trump's influence. 2025-2028 are going to be very ugly for Republicans if Trump wins again.
