More than 32.2 million total people tuned in on Thursday night for President Joe Biden’s 2024 State of the Union address followed by the Republican response (provided by Alabama Sen. Katie Britt), according to updated tallies from Nielsen.

That marks an 18% gain over last year’s SOTU. Nielsen notes that 5% of viewers were aged 18-34, 19% were 35-54, and 74% of viewers were aged 55 and older.

Biden
2021: 26.9m
2022: 38.2m
2023: 27.3m
2024: 32.2m

An 18% bounce from last year, and the 2nd highest rated for Biden

It can’t explain the drop in favorable from 72% in 2023 to 64% in 2024 then. It would require the drop off to only be 20% favorable.

Jesus Christ you are insufferable. That CNN poll had a less Dem percentage/higher GOP percentage this year. Find something new to incessantly parrot.

Because the ratings from a non-presidential elect year don’t matter! Look at cycles where the incumbent is running for reelection!

I think this signifies the death of traditional media or political viewership in general. Biden in an election year recieved the same numbers as lame-duck Obama. Social media has overstimulated so many people that very few people actually tune into stuff like SOTU, Inaugarations, RNC/DNC conventions, etc. That's why 3/4 of the viewers were 55+.

While this is probably true to an extent, I wonder if declined viewership is also a product of people watching on streaming platforms rather than network television.

I mean yes and no. 32M for traditional TV in 2024 is a great number, without a doubt. But it would be interesting to see what the number would be reflected with how many people watched in non-traditional ways (streaming, on IG, etc.)

Is riverwalk the new SN2903?  Boy am I already tired of this character just popping into every single thread about Biden to say the exact same 3-5 talking points.

He's getting to that stage, that much is certain.
