So no-name candidate Jason Palmer managed to defeat Biden in the American Samoa caucuses, making Joe Biden the first incumbent president to lose a primary contest since 1980 (outside of a couple of 1996 contests Bill Clinton wasn't on the ballot for). American Samoa does not disappoint, between this and giving Bloomberg his only win in 2020 (with Tulsi Gabbard in 2nd place!) I checked Jason Palmer's Wikipedia page, and it turned out that the page was literally created after his primary win! So the guy didn't even have a Wikipedia page, and yet he defeated the incumbent president of the United States! What a legend.

So how did Palmer achieve this remarkable feat? Simple, he went down to campaign in American Samoa when no other candidate did, which got him 51 votes to outnumber Biden's 40 votes. Although this contest is completely meaningless due to the tiny vote count and this territory's isolation from the mainland US, it's still really funny and a pretty bad look for Biden (the Biden campaign should have had some minimal level of organization in these territories to prevent embarrassments like this).

With that background out of the way, this thread is for any discussion of Jason Palmer's campaign.

I don’t know why people keep repeating this when it isn’t true Bill Clinton lost North Dakota to some random dude and lost Michigan to “uncommitted” in 1996

So are the Democratic National Committee going to Lyndon LaRouche him and find some technicality so he doesn't have his delegates at the Convention?

If the Democratic Party believes in democracy after all, he should have his delegates unheeded. He won them.

Bill Clinton wasn't on the ballot in either of those states in 1996.

That guy sounds like an interesting dude...

In October 2022, Reimers was charged with a Class B misdemeanor disorderly conduct after a one-day trial. Riemers had parked his car near the train tracks at the intersection of 55th Street N. and DeMers Ave. in Grand Forks, ND and attempted to put a BNSF Railway train and all of its staff under citizen's arrest for blocking the road for more than 10 minutes. During the trial he stated “I am an activist against train blockages in Grand Forks, I consider this a serious problem.” It took 20 minutes for the jury to reach a guilty verdict and he was sentenced to 360 days of unsupervised probation and a $500 fine. I was unaware of that fact until today; but upon digging further - at least with North Dakota it was due to Clinton protesting the state trying to move up the primary date (similar to Biden boycotting New Hampshire this time; only I guess no one in the ND Democratic party thought to come up with a write-in strategy for Clinton).

Bill Clinton did not lose any primaries in 1996. He was not on the primary ballot in Michigan or North Dakota in 1996, so he didn't lose to anyone in those states

Hawai'i and Mariana Islands, and some others on the mainland (where Jason is "actually very well known!")

Why would the DNC care enough about like 6 deglates to put an effort into blocking them? Biden has at least 99 percent of the delegates, he's fine.

3 delegates. AS' 6 delegates split 3-3 between Palmer and Biden.

I think it's more about the novelty. This will make an incredibly fun trivia question in 10 years.

They've done it twice before. 2000 and 2012.

I said in op that this primary is completely meaningless. I do think it's a bad look for Biden that he wasn't able to lock down the territory, but I don't think it actually means anything for the election. It's just a really funny and embarrassing thing that happened.

This is going to be a very meaningless thing because it drives some Biden supporters insane. They will no longer be able to claim he swept every primary unlike Trump, and every time they pull up that map there is going to be a spec of blue for Palmer. Means absolutely nothing for the general though.

Those candidates were complete nuts who didn't support Gore/Obama or anything the party stands for. Palmer seems like a normal guy (I mean, normal for a rando who runs for president) who has a standard Democratic platform and will endorse Biden, so I would assume he'll keep his 3 delegates.

He’s on the ballot in AZ. I wrestled with voting for him or Cornejo and chose the latter, since both seemed relatively normal for the protest candidate options. Had I only waited for Samoamentum!

You have a very impressive map of the USA if it stretches deep into the Pacific to show American Samoa.

Anyway, I hope Jason Palmer enjoyed his tropical vacation...er...campaign. And I'm glad he has more delegates than Dean Phillips because it piles on more embarrassment on Dean Phillips.

Clearly he targeted a place he knew it was easy to win which was smart for reasons of obtaining a win just to say you won a race.

I bet Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson are kicking themselves for not campaigning in American Samoa

I didn't know Vermont was an independent republic. Is this 1791?

You misread what they said, they acknowledged that Trump did not sweep every primary. I give you that their wording was confusing though.
