That was the last time I felt such a seismic shift in an election’s odds. And mind you, I was bearish on Biden in the first place.

Difference is Biden has time to bow out and do the right thing for his party and America. I am just pessimistic he will do so.

As of now, I unironically believe Hillary Clinton herself would do better in a rematch than Biden would.

How exactly did you rate Biden’s chances before this?

The Comey letter was devastating because of the timing-11 days before the election.

Thankfully, Hur clearly wasn't calculated enough to save this until October.

Hillary would be lucky to crack 100 EVs.

That was a week before the election. This is 9 months away. No one will care.

The Comey letter probably wasn't a "seismic shift". It just depressed/switched enough voters in a close election to swing the Midwest towards Trump. And as Progressive Pessimist notes, it was 11 days before the election. Had the Comey letter come out in February, I'd imagine it would have had negligible effects on the overall election.

I’m not going to lie, I hadn’t even heard of this until now. That should tell you how much of an impact it will have on the election.

The Comey letter was two weeks before the election. This is 9 months away. Totally different scenario.

Let's see what Biden says now.

Actually reminds me of a point I've seen: This is actually pretty lousy timing on Hur's part because it's just a couple days before the Super Bowl. No one's going to be talking about this on Super Bowl Sunday or afterwards.

Something's going to happen tomorrow--maybe announcing a $370 million judgment against Trump--and this will wipe out the Hur report from the news and the focus will be on that issue for the next 24 hours.  And the media will love it.

Biden’s mental acuity will be a major topic at Super Bowl parties this Sunday.

I kind of view it like Fetterman's stroke right now - a media narrative that's overhyped as something that will a hurt a candidate when in the end if doesn't matter.

So far, this whole election kind of strikes me as a combination of the 2022 Pennsylvania Senate election and the Oregon gubernatorial election of that year.

The Comey letter mattered because it was released on October 28. Voters were hesitating in 2016 because they disliked both candidates and Clinton just had the bad luck to have the last scandal.

The Comey letter? There's no way you literally haven't heard of it if you were even vaguely following the 2016 campaign. If you weren't then you would have almost certainly seen a reference to it here at some point before this thread.

Not considering Nevada  2022 GOV in this? I would

The Comey letter was devastating because of the timing-11 days before the election.

Thankfully, Hur clearly wasn't calculated enough to save this until October.

Reading through his report, it really feels like he's trying to have his cake and eat it, too. He's putting out lots of Biden critical-stuff, things can readily be framed negatively that we'll be seeing non-stop on the fascist and fascist-enabling media from now until the election (and in right-wing conspiracy theories forever). But at the same time, he's not launching a weak set of charges in an obviously political move like Durham and Weiss, nor is he waiting to drop this as an October Surprise.

So it really feels like he's trying to give the MAGA-establishment plenty of reasons to appreciate his work (not that they have any loyalty), and still be able to say "I just did my job, so I still have a career outside MAGA-land, right?"

It will provide DNC cover for the inevitable parachuting in of Newsom or Whitmer.
