The most important thing I learned from this article is that American union structures are extremely broken - not hopelessly; just extremely.

If you work for Starbucks in the UK and want to join a union, you join the BFAWU, a well-respected and long-established union for foodservice workers in all cafés and restaurants. If you work for Starbucks in the US and want to join a union, you join a special Starbucks-only NLRB-approved union that was created out of thin air five years ago.

Now imagine if UK Starbucks workers had to join ASLEF, the train drivers' union.
