Money is by no means the end all be all, but the GOP is going to have to be much more strategic about where and how they spend whereas Dems have some ability to invest in reach states/seats/races and protect places like MN and ME they're favored to win but just to be safe.

There's a finite amount of Republican donor money available, and a great deal of it has gone to Trump's PACs, i.e. to his lawyers, Melania's hair stylist, etc..

Trump is bleeding the Republican Party dry, and they are fine with it.

It really is like an abusive relationship out of a Tyler Perry or Lifetime movie.

Still $8mil too much. No sane person should donate a nickel for them until the party becomes sane again anyway.

It is funny to see Trump bleed the GOP dry while all the money is going to pay his legal bills and Malania's hair stylist. But hey, this is the choice the party made.

Yep, Trump needs all the money he can to pay for his legal bills because he’s probably personally close to being broke.

Which is kind of funny in itsself as well as the fact his supporters aren't capable of realizing this. While the amounts of money Trump has to spend on all the legal stuff are insane, these would still be peanuts for an actual "billionaire".

"Money is the mother's milk of politics" is a famous quote that is to be taken seriously.

This is like East Germany in 1989--and why the Soviet empire crashed and burned--they had no money.

Exactly right that if he were a true billionaire, Trump could fund his own campaign.  There's only so much smoke and mirrors that he can throw out there.

Obama-Trump voters tend not to be donors. They didn't really donate to the Democrats either for the most part.

Romney-Hillary/Biden voters probably aren't big donors to the Democrats either, but a lot of them did donate to the Republicans and are now just not donating at all. That clearly hurts the GOP more on net. There's even a lot of voters who are still Republicans and voted for Trump twice but donated in the past and refuse to now because they only reluctantly voted for Trump and/or they don't like how he blows money now. Corporate donations to the GOP are mostly down too. There's no easy way out of this for the Republicans as long as Trump is relevant.

I was a Romney voter who gave money to Clinton so they are out there. Probably more than you might think since they are probably a lot more engaged than mindless party loyalists.

That's not the Republican way. It's all about looking backwards.

Everyone mentions Trump

Are they this broke because they have paid Trumps legal fees, which drained the money or do they just suck at fundraising?

Though their faults are many, Republicans have usually been good fund-raisers.

It's kind of a combination of both. I suspect that there's also potential Republican donors who want to donate money that would actually go to help Republican candidates, not pay Trump's legal fees. Remember that the RNC was paying his legal fees up until the point he officially declared and they no longer legally could. Doesn't seem like a good use of funds.

It's worth pointing out that most GOP candidates' fundraising is fine. Not great, usually worse than their Democratic opponents, but fine. See the Congressional boards. And Trump's fundraising is also fine.

It's literally everything else in the institutional party that just can't find any money. National parties, state parties, the NRSC and NRCC, so on and so forth. I think there's an element that many Trump megafans (word fan used intentionally) just don't particularly like the Republican Party.
