As if anybody needed reminding, but the "second half of 2024" is by definition any date after July 1st.

Can’t wait for it to be another pointless “game-changer” reshuffle bringing back Lord Clarke as Secretary of State for Health.

Who is the Peter Mandleson of the Tories?

Between the Euros, Olympics and a general election, it will be a fun and eventful summer.

Have to say, it would be a class act for Sunak to call an election while students are scattered in marginals across the country, rather than concentrated in about 10 ultra-safe Labour seats and 3 SNP-Lab marginals.

Cameron is the controversial (read: overrated slimeball) figure who left under a cloud only to make a shocking comeback to a high profile post as everything was falling apart for his party (and also getting a peerage into the bargain).

If this is true then it would indicate the cabinet meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 4:15, won't be particularly long. Probably more like half an hour given that Sunak wouldn't instantly appear outside once it is over.

There’s a non-zero chance the cabinet/parliamentary party revolts to such a degree at this plan that Sunak ends up resigning/being deposed.

Not saying it’s likely, but it’s more plausible now than it was this morning. Sunak has really alienated a lot of people.

This is such a weird way of going about it, if he is indeed finally going about it. Even down to the details: he won't actually be able to see the King until his scheduled meeting at 6pm as his diary is full and normally things are carefully arranged to avoid that.

Can the tory party even elect a leader once parliament is dissolved?

De Facto once the king accepts the GE call it's locked in, even though de jure there is a way to cancel it. Thats the real reason why letters are going it, I suspect they will be withdrawn once the call happens. If they still want to be vindictive then it's their funeral.

Love that they’re calling a GE on the basis of the economy when for the first time in 50 years the opposition Labour Party are leading on the economy.

But remember he’s much smarter than all of us

As someone from beyond the pond it feels funny to see Britain voting on Independence Day.

More speculation about an imminent election call in view of tomorrow's inflation figures. It almost certainly won't happen, but Sunak really ought to name a date in order to stop this constant cycle of speculation (which obviously isn't helpful to him or to his party), even if that date is circa six months away. This kind of thing has happened in other Parliamentary democracies and of course many countries have fixed election dates. In the case of 2015 it was known to a 99% certainty that the election would be on the 7th of May that year for years beforehand.

Perhaps they listened to me.
