So far, he's doing better than Obama, lmao.

I mean us Atlas Conservatives are way more likely to approve of Clinton than Obama and Center Left Posters are likely to approve of both so it makes sense that Clinton>Obama in approvals so far.

He was clearly a Beijing operative in the 1996 election and then pushed hard to get China admitted to the WTO.

Didn't people (or, at least, economists) back then believe the 'end of history' nonsense?

I don't know but there were people who thought the Dow Jones would be a million by now and that a "new economy company" like AOL was a fool for trying to merge with an "old economy company" like Time Warner. I'm not a fan of Greenspan, but he really had it right with "irrational exuberance".

Strictly as a President? Great, the best President of the last 50 years. Along with HW Bush he led a gradual decline in total force number for the U.S. armed forces from 1990 to 2000 the number shrank from 2 million to just over 1.4 million. The Omnibus Crime Bill was a mixed bag, and his execution of Ricky Ray Rector are negative things. Generally, I am opposed to gun control, and find myself going back and forth on my opinion of the assault weapons ban. I think NAFTA along with the general deregulation under Clinton was a big part that allowed for the late 1990s economic boom. Of course there were missteps in this, Gramm-Lynch-Bliley and banking deregulation was a bad decision. Sometime ago I was able to visit the Oklahoma City Memorial Museum, truly one of the most heart wrenching experiences in my life. I have a great deal of respect for his handling of that attack and its aftermath.

Foreign policy, which I tend to see as the most important purview of the President is also the place where Clinton shines quite bright. Supporting and promoting Kosovar forces along with working to end the ethnic cleansing in the region was a major step forward and has had incredible success in projecting US influence on the Balkans. The Rwanda genocide is extremely unfortunate, and is the major blemish on Clinton’s foreign policy. His administration did learn from this thought which led to the quick response to possible disaster scenarios in Former Yugoslavia.

It's complicated. His legacy has gotten worse over the past decade or two, and he deserves a lot of that scrutiny for his personal foibles and relatively conservative tenure, but there was some good done in his eight years too.

The man did serious collateral damage in his presidency by moving the economic policies of thr Democratic Party further right as it was trending for years. The free trade agreements, the welfare reform, tough on crime measures, Glass-Steagall, Don't Ask Don't Tell, all some of the fabulous achievements that marked the eight years of the Clinton adminstration. His moral character is untrustworthy and I am glad the MeToo era has made it clear what a despicable man is.

Can't add anything new here beyond the general consensus.

The Democratic party was handed a perfect out with the impeachment - they should have made it a bipartisan issue, kicked him to the curb, let Gore, someone actually got to be president, serve out his term, and left Bill Clinton to spend the rest of his life as a persona non grata in US politics. One of the greatest strategic misplays in US political history

I like him, but I guess I'm probably the only one here who does and actually viewed the 90s as a good time for this country.

You are aware that prior to 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' that military members who were accused of being LGBTQ+ were actively investigated and thrown out of the military if shown to be LGBTQ+?

Yes, certainly 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' was, in hindsight, a half measure, but it not only was far better than what preceded it, at the time it was a significant if not revolutionary change.

Seriously, some people here just 'out themselves' with their absurd/impractical demands for purity/perfection.

I have a bit more of a nuanced view of him as the hindsight at the time wasn't as clear. He represented a youthful, energetic vision of a post Cold War America and I believe that he was sincere in believing that "the era of big government was over". While I disagreed with some of his policies (especially post 1994), I appreciated his optimistic demeaner about it. I'd say that he was somewhat of a mild "FF" during his presidency, although given what has happened since then especially with his deregulation policies, I have a lower opinion of him.

Proof that humble beginnings are no inoculation for capitulating to winner-take-all policies, to say nothing of his Stone Mountain moment.

I like him, but I guess I'm probably the only one here who does and actually viewed the 90s as a good time for this country.

Prosperity during the 90s had more to do with the Baby Boomers reaching their most productive years (30s-40s) and technological advances than any hot-button economic policies during the time period.
