About as good as you could expect from a Pope.

Very difficult to be a FF while being the head of the Catholic church, but he seems like a genuinely good dude.

Mixed bag. Still too conservative for my taste, though generally I'd say a very soft FF.

This is exactly why it’s cringe when some religious leaders bend over backwards to adhere to the beliefs of whatever mainstream progressivism is … they’re never going to win you over, and they alienate the people still in their churches.  The Pope isn’t too bad in this regard, but the Mainline Protestant leadership (and I am one, proudly) in the US is the definition of an eye roll.

Churches that change their dogmas just to be more appealing to the masses are doomed to fail, yeah. Of course, that's not what Francis is doing at all, and in many ways he is merely elaborating on parts of the Church's doctrine that have always been there but were conveniently ignored for the sake of political expediency in previous centuries. His personal disposition seems to be to ignore culture wars as much as possible and focus on pastoral care and on putting the faithful in a place where they can trust the Church again, and therefore ultimately listen to its teachings. Of course it's too soon to say if he'll succeed in that.

He became popular as the semi Liberación Theology pope (the 'preferential choice for the poor' part of it) with social leaders skills from the Third World.
Then, he started the 'social liberal'(for a pope) stances that had hurt him with some catholics, even if they had little actual effect on the Church.
Out of that, he has been a decent pope. Well, he has been more focused on the Thirs World than his predecesors, but thay was expected. African, asian and oceanic countries are the future of catholicism.
Well, the current archbishop of Lima is to the left of the prior (a Opus Dei member), but that doesn't mean much.

As a committed Catholic, FF.

Perhaps a bit more liberal than my alignment in the Church, but an undeniably great and pious man.

I appreciate him proving us right about the inherently revolutionary nature of the institution of the papacy.

As someone who's actually more sympathetic to the Orthodox approach to ecclesiology, you're making a compelling argument for the Catholic side. Cheesy

I have little doubt that the people of Atlas would see it that way. It interests me because I have often had tradcaths tell me that the institution of the papacy is necessary to maintain continuity of faith and interpretation, but the trend has been that this is not the case and the tendency is more to change things and selectively read history to transform those changes into the "real" tradition. Pope Francis is simply acting in line with a very long tradition of papal activity, which only appears shocking to some because the losers of previous rounds have been buried and forgotten.

Fun factoid of the day:  I missed the white smoke by like a week once that old ass Nazi Kraut abdicated (or whatever term they use)

I stood at St Peters Square for like 3 hours, thinking I was about to witness history.

Close, but no cigar.

File him off in the same category as Lula: FF who needs to shut the f**k up up about major international events outside of Latin America.
