Using the US Census Bureau's definition except I reject the classification of Maryland/Delaware as Southern.

Pretty sure we've done this before, but it's been a while so let's do it again.

Anyway, I think you all know what my answer is...

That's like saying "If not for Chicago Illinois would be a Republican state."

The difference is Chicago is one of the greatest cities in America, and Furnace Fest is... uh... not that. Even if it was as great as you make it out to be, it's only held a few days out of the year. Kinda crazy to say that makes up for the rest of Alabama.

No, it's the greatest music fest in the entire history of the world, so quite comparable.

(Although interestingly Chicago is home to the SECOND greatest music fest in world history.)

Hard call between Virginia and Texas, going with former since it has no votes.

Hey, I could say the same about the West Coast states these days. Except it's probably closer to literally true, with all the needles and bodily fluids on the streets of the cities.

STD rates are higher in the south. Of the ten states with the highest STD rates, eight are in the South. But I suppose my favorite STD-infested slave state would have to be Virginia (rich in beauty, history, and diversity).

I've never visited any of it, and it seems rather muggy overall, but I guess Georgia has the best politics as the moment and seems to have some nice gardens and flowering trees so there my vote goes.

Chicagoland is something like two-thirds of Illinois' population.  Greater Birmingham is barely 20% of Alabama's.

Illinois without Chicago just isn't Illinois.

You're refusing to acknowledge the most proximate reason the South scores so highly in this category to begin with:  Black people who, in every region of the country, consistently and measurably fall behind other groups in terms of wealth, health, and opportunity.  It is not surprising that the region of the country with, both historically and today, the highest proportion of African Americans would be carrying a legacy of generational oppression and disinvestment more than others.  Similarly Black communities in New York, California, Illinois, etc. have the exact some problems with STDs, education, crime, etc., etc.

Florida is somehow the best answer and the worst answer at the exact same time. The best of Florida is the best part of the south but the worst of Florida is right there amongst the worst places in this country.

#NeverFlorida.

Virginia, but Georgia may be coming close to surpassing it.

For non-political reasons, I do at least love Cajun food. So I have some esteem for Louisiana.

Also, capitalizing "Black."
