Newt Gingrich is calling for legislative compromise with Democrats. We are through the looking glass.

This is the sort of stuff they’re sending to the spouses. These message were sent to Don Bacon’s wife:

In what universe does this make you want to vote for Jim Jordan?

All it says is - “Vote for me, and I’ll spend the next few years anonymously harassing your loved ones whenever you have a difference of opinion with me.”

It’s so dumb, and needlessly stressful for those involved.

Yeah imagine being on the fence about whether or not Jordan is too nuts and then getting a text like that? That’s middle school sh*t

In a way this makes sense.  Now hear me out because I agree it is a dumb and horrible strategy.  I am not surprised that this is Jordan’s only backup plan b/c he has no experience compromising to win over folks he disagrees with and isn’t really a serious legislator.  He has been there over a decade and a half without a single bill of his becoming law and is more interested in showboating for the cameras.  He is essentially in a high stakes situation that requires him to learn a brand new skill set at a very high level overnight and on the fly.

Lacking the ability to do so, it should come as no surprise that Jordan is falling back on his usual tools of bullying by Fox News proxy, vague threats of right-wing primary challenges, and general harassment.  While these may work when you’re doing virtue signaling in an attempt to cause performative gridlock, they’re not nearly as effective when you’re trying to persuade folks who neither need or necessarily even like you to help you out.

These are fundamentally offensive strategies meant to be deployed against intraparty enemies, but they are not coalition-building strategies.  It is no surprise that Jordan, lacking the latter, has instead opted for the former.  It’s really the course he has charted his whole career, so why would one expect something different during the biggest test he’s faced during his political career thus far.

Two little bits of news - LaLota has gone on CNN, and endorsed the "empower McHenry" position. It follows David Joyce's announcement this morning that he's planning to file a motion to make McHenry a "permanent Speaker Pro Tem", however that's supposed to work. That seems to be the plan that Boehner and Gingrich have also endorsed.

And anonymous GOP Reps continue to insist they have the numbers to hold off Jordan, and potentially increase the rebellion:

Crazy that if we were still on Atlas Classic, we'd be having to make a second megathread for this already.

So does Jordan actually go through with the vote or do we think he withdraws?

The thing for me here is that McHenry isn't some moderate either. Maybe I'm cynical, but sorry, I don't believe that he's this shining light in the situation that will suddenly act like a mature adult and handle things. He's just as conservative as McCarthy and Jordan, he already pulled the stunt with Pelosi's office right after McCarthy was ousted which shows he's not as "mature" as people think. He also seemingly just finds himself in this situation by chance; what are the credentials that give him the right to be speaker in name basically? I get this is a path of least resistance here, but I don't find this option that great either in terms of things actually getting done. Seems just like a cop out for the GOP since they know they literally can't get anyone to 217.

I'm shocked this type of pressure campaign is not working. You'd think harassing the spouses of the reps would work!

Jordan is consistently pro-harassment. Of various kinds.

From what I understand if he had his powers expanded then he won’t have the exact same powers as speaker and won’t be able to block aid to Ukraine or debt deal

So most likely we can stick a fork in Jordan. Which is a good thing, we don't need an election denying weirdo as speaker.

Sounds that way. At this point, it sounds like expanding McHenry's powers is the most realistic outcome here. This group of Republicans won't ever agree on a speaker.

Does anyone have a link for a good summary of what's happened with this over the past week or so? I was helping my dad while he had a medical procedure, and while I popped in on stuff, I feel like I don't have a good grasp of what all has really gone on, just bits and pieces from headlines and here.

This is pretty good - https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/17/us/politics/jordan-speaker-house.html though it doesn't go into Scalise's debacle as much

Yup, though I consider it total ignorance they refuse to cut a deal with Dems. It's clear they don't have the votes for any speaker and instead of putting the country first and work with the other side, the GOP keeps everything hostage.

This is from a Jordan ally, btw:

If they’re admitting they’re going to lose votes, this first ballot must be a real bad look for them…

Hopefully the parliamentarian will tell them to piss off if they basically install him as Speaker by fiat.
