Anti Jordan Rs want an immediate vote- ie they think they have still have the votes to bloke him.

I'm wondering if this implies a unified candidate they would get behind.

Either that - or they’re worried that Jordan will be able to peel off enough votes to get some some momentum if he stalls the vote for another few hours/until tomorrow.

Clearly the obvious solution is to just make Hakeem Jeffries Speaker.

He wouldn’t have the votes to survive a motion to vacate . The obvious solution is one that the US constitution doenst provide and that is a snap election

The Constitution also doesn’t prevent it.

So it would be constitutional for congress pass a law authorizing snap elections if the majority of the house is unable to select a speaker in X number of days .

I believe so. It was proposed several times during the 1855–56 election but was voted down each time. It might be out of order, but the rules of order can be amended.

No way an incumbent party would call a snap election in this situation, just like the Tories didn't, because that's a great way to lose the majority.

Another solution would be to depoliticize the office of the Speaker...as presidents of parliament are in most democracies and as was intented in the US constitution.

Totally a random, but am I the only who noticed Jordan pretty much always wears a yellow tie?

Didn't Boris call a snap election in 2019 specifically to win a majority for a Brexit deal?

It didn’t work for May, for many reasons, but one of the big ones was that she seemed opportunistic - trying to expand what was effectively a working majority (if a little tight).

It *did* work for Boris Johnson, two years later, when he called a snap election of his own, and was able to run against the dysfunction of a parliament without a clear majority, and demand a clear mandate to push through policy.

If you can shift the blame from your own party’s poor discipline to the ‘obstructionism’ of the opposition, there are plenty of votes that can be won. It’s just a hard act to pull off.

That case was hilarious as Boris wanted a no confidence vote against him while the opposition didn’t and at the time there was a rule preventing a PM from calling a snap election without 2/3rd of parliament agreeing.

So Boris passed a law that specifically called for a new election in 2019 and the opposition was forced to vote for it once it was clear it would pass to avoid losing face.

Brian Fitzpatrick really voted for Jordan. Just incredible.

I hope he loses in 2024. Generally, what Spectator said:

I hope those Biden district Republicans enjoyed it while it lasted.

Truss didn’t lose a no confidence vote like McCarthy did . If she did then the Tories would have only a certain period of time to elect a new pm, otherwise a snap election would automatically be called .

Maybe the fear of snap elections would prevent McCarthy from being removed to begin with

All this waiting around for single Reps to show up reminds me of another febrile period in British politics, the chaos of 1979. Callaghan’s government had lost its majority, and relied on intermittent support from some combination of Liberals, Ulster Unionists, and Scottish, Welsh and Irish nationalist MPs.

Ailing, highly frail MPs would sometimes be driven to Parliament in ambulances to cast their vote. When the government finally fell in a confidence vote initiated by Margaret Thatcher, it was by a single vote: 311-310.

Edit: I know all this Brit-posting is wildly off-topic, but there’s not much else to do while we wait for the horse-trading to end and a second ballot to be called. And I do think that we’re about as close as the US House can get to that sort of scenario under the current two-party system.

Reason why Jim Jordan will never be Speaker. He is too much of a liablity. He activly participated in Trumps Efforts to subvert the 2020 Election, never denounced the J6 Attacks and still promotes Trumps Election 2020 lies

Thank You for speaking out Mr. Buck. We need more people like you saying that Smiley

Everything I’m seeing indicates he does, but his path there isn’t challenging the caucus nominee, and it would remove him from future consideration.

Bacon has joined the others in calling for an immediate vote. The Anti-Jordan crowd seems confident and look to already have the votes to block Jordan

The nos want to put the loser tag on Jordan before his MAGA allies start a full campaign to try and intimidate them or worse.

Jordan and Scalise seem to be at each other’s throats:

Maybe this will finally be enough to convince the likes of Ann Wagner to ditch Jordan?

Actually the opposite: from what I’ve read, all indications were that McHenry was going to retire at the end of the Congress and take a lucrative corporate job before this Speakership mess started and he was elevated to his position.

Further Comments by Rep. Ken Buck on CNN. Not only does he want Republicans say Trump lost in 2020 but he also tells Laura Coates that he can't vote for a Speaker who activly was involved in the shenanigans on January 6th 2021

LaMalfa confirmed FLIP McCarthy -> Jordan

States that his McCarthy vote was cast as a protest of his ouster and only made because his vote didn’t matter; supports Jordan going forward.
