If Jim Jordan ends up Speaker then this whole episode was a mistake on the part of the Democrats. Jim Jordan is an absolute disaster. Even if he only lasts a few weeks before being torpedoed by his own party, I don't see what was gained from this.

If Jim Jordan ends up Speaker then actblue will melt down faster than ticketmaster.

First off, Gym Jordan will be an electoral/fundraising boom for Democrats. Second, can we stop blaming Democrats for the GOP being crazy? It’s like those people who were running around and blaming the Democrats for Trump being nominated in 2016 because they were too mean to Romney in 2012 🙄

Democrats have absolutely nothing to do with this. Republicans chose to bend the knee to the crazies, the crazies removed McCarthy, now the crazies are the ones calling the shots. Democrats do not have any obligation to help Republicans get their sh*t together. If they refuse to govern like adults, then hopefully the voters will take the majority away from them and give it back to the party that actually wants to govern.

I'm not blaming Democrats for the GOP being crazy. It's their own fault. Unfortunately for us though, they have a House majority and control what bills come to the floor. McCarthy was going to bring Ukraine aid to the floor and held a vote on avoiding a shutdown. If Jordan becomes speaker and doesn't do those things, then it was a mistake to whip on the motion to vacate.

It isn't the Democrats "responsibility" to clean up Republican messes, nor is it their "fault" if Jordan wins, but it could still be a poor strategy on their part. Just because you don't have a partisan or moral reason to prop up McCarthy doesn't mean that toppling him was the smart move. We'll see how it goes.

It was a smart move. Neither McCarthy or Jordan should be speaker. He deserved to be ousted. Also don't believe he would keep his word on anything, let alone bringing more Ukraine aid to the floor. This was all GOP's own making, and they will need to deal with the consequences.

I always find "life begins at conception" to be an absolutely hilarious take when coming from modern Republicans.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK222286/
Quote
All human individuals—whether they have an XX, an XY, or an atypical sex chromosome combination—begin development from the same starting point. During early development the gonads of the fetus remain undifferentiated; that is, all fetal genitalia are the same and are phenotypically female. After approximately 6 to 7 weeks of gestation, however, the expression of a gene on the Y chromosome induces changes that result in the development of the testes.

If "life begins at conception", then all males are transgender.

Not sure where you’re getting that idea. He’s still got a long way to go before this gets to a floor vote (if it ever does).

He has the momentum but I think we need more flips to conclude he'll get there.

Also I do think there can be some daylight between the positions that Dems should have kept McCarthy speaker and that they did something wrong by removing him.

In which camp is Santos on Jordan so far? I kinda lost track with the story, although Jordan seems to make progress. But yeah, he'd be a disaster.

Do we want to know how these “deals” are being made?

I wonder if part of the late swing in his favour is driven by his enemies (a)expecting him to fail quickly as Speaker and (b)seeing this as necessary to reduce his influence. This approach would be dangerous and appeal to the spineless, but an especially pundit-brained Representative might be the most receptive to it.

I hope there will be enough holdouts to block Jordan. We don't need an insurrectionist election denier as speaker of the house.

Do you want to see an even more ineffective speaker than McCarthy? Well here you go.

The US certainly doesn't a shutdown in November though that may last for a very long time. That's what I expect with Jordan.

Right. They're electing one of the most extreme right wingers in the House. Unfortunately, I think the moderates will eventually cave and vote for him so the crazies won't go on TV and blame them for the disarray.

I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch because this kind of thing has backfired on Democrats before but...

Congrats to the next next Speaker of the House, Hakeem Jeffries (2025-)

Jim Jordan will deliver Democrats their biggest House majority since 2019
