I thought that too, until real world events brought home to me how truth is stranger than fiction, as the saying goes... 

That's because fiction needs to have at least a veneer of plausibility or it won't sell, while reality isn't similarly constrained.

It is amusing, though.  Back in 2017, I wrote an AH about the 1968 election that turned on an absentee ballot fraud scheme in North Carolina.  I almost didn't write it that way because it seemed so wildly implausible.  What happened in the 2018 midterms?  There was a House race that was affected by an absentee ballot fraud scheme...in North Carolina.
