Menendez was obviously corrupt in 2018 when he got Murphy and Booker's endorsements in the primary.

Cartoon villain level stuff. Was he wearing a monocle and top hat when he took them?
Yes, and he also got bills in big burlap sacks with dollar signs on them.

Yeah, but I think he's used up all the "Get Out Of Jail Free" cards from his Monopoly game.

It is time for him to Go To Jail.  Go Directly To Jail.  Do Not Pass Go.  Do Not Collect 2 Million Dollars.

Torricelli's problems are overstated in retrospect, mostly as a result of him dropping out of the race and the ensuing fracas, and they never came close to what is alleged against Menendez; he wasn't even indicted. He's still a pretty popular speaker.

The general election wound up being close in 1996 but it's worth noting that the primary victim of his campaign finance chicanery was, in fact, Bob Menendez.

My neighbor certainly speaks highly of him. He’s somewhat of a mentor to him, actually - he wants to work in real estate. Anyway I don’t mean to derail the thread, I just find it an interesting parallel.

If only it was him running for Menendez's seat instead of Andy Kim. Andy Kim is fine, but imagine the content of Torricelli calling Cory Booker a piece of sh**t whose balls he's gonna cut off.

I wonder how/if his daughter will cover it this weekend. She usually just ignores news about her dad entirely.

Her show is pre-empted for a special on the looming government shutdown, but they said the show will be back tomorrow.

Kim has good character, I remember on January 6th he stayed in the building after the other congresspeople had gone home and helped the janitorial staff clean up late into the night.

I had no idea that she was his daughter. You learn something new every day, I suppose.

Evergreen headline. This happens every couple years, doesn't it?

Every three years, but still a good analogy!

Perhaps unsurprising, she is not on her show today, Castro is in for her. But he said she's coming back next week. Don't know what if anything this says about him maybe thinking about resigning. In any case, I now expect she will never mention it.

Forgive me if I already mentioned this earlier in the thread and forgot, but I'm not going to go back through the last four pages to check. It's very refreshing to see when I Democratic politician like this is indicted that Democrats nearly uniformly called Throw the bum out. So so different from unpatriotic Republicans who savagely fight hardest to have the back of the chief criminal of all and all his various flunkies.

The official White House position is that it is good that Menendez stepped down as Foreign Relations chair but that it's his own decision whether to resign from the Senate. Why?

Well if they called for him to resign it could give the appearance they're trying to influence the legal case. And they're going to great pains not to comment on anything DOJ does that touches the political realm.

This is the right stance, imo. He was duly elected for a six-year-term. A mere indictment does not require a resignation.
But leaving aside the merits, Rs are unlikely to get behind Menendez being removed, so if you are Biden, why do you burn all bridges by calling for his resignation? Especially when Menendez could just become a lobbyist in a worst-case scenario after going to jail.
