This is very much not a thing in Germany and Austria for some reason.

It's not a thing to the extent being described almost anywhere outside the Antipodes. It's a little more of a thing in the Midwest than in the Northeast, as I found out the hard way when I made the mistake of attempting to figure out how a vending machine at O'Hare worked back in October, but I think the vast majority of Americans and Europeans would see it as sinister and control-oriented that, for instance, a bank would refuse to allow someone to make a withdrawal.
