Meet Chris Fenwick.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-10/no-voice-campaign-donor-simon-fenwick-indigenous-ventures-730/102955688

Simon Fenwick is the largest known donor to Advance Australia.(AFR)

Mr Fenwick is the largest known donor to Advance Australia, which is behind the Fair Australia campaign.

"It's pretty clear that he considers himself to be an ideological warrior of the right," said Josh Roose, an associate professor of political sociology at Deakin University.

"He rails very powerfully against what he considers to be the cultural Marxism that's underpinning Australian politics. He talks about brainwashing, identity politics, he rails against climate change."

Personally, he could have saved his $1.4M donation. The NO campaign, according to the latest RESOLVE polls, is almost home.

You're getting there.

These people don't want to save their money because they are determined to smother any attempt at giving people rights. They would have been campaigning against the 1967 referendum, I have no doubt of that.

At this point, I'm waiting for them to start saying that Mabo should be overturned, Native Title Act repealed, and that the 1967 referendum should be done over.

https://edition.cnn.com/2023/10/07/australia/australia-voice-referendum-division-intl-dst-hnk/index.html

" Ceasar D’sa left the United Kingdom on June 23, 2016 – the day of the Brexit vote – because he disliked the racist undertones that emerged during the debate. "

" “A lot of racists came out of the closet,” he said. "

(7 years later...)

“It’s an absolutely hard No for me,” he said. “I moved here for a better life with my kids and I don’t want the division.” "

He would probably fit nicely in California.

The VOICE in Western Sydney

A Current Affair

Looks like most Australians are no longer interested in the VOICE. A lot have already voted and the Israeli news has now pushed it into the background.

We're nearly there.  I'm predicting a national vote around 41-59 (with a little room for margin of error, of course).
NSW, Vic, SA, QLD, WA - No
ACT - Yes
Northern Territory & Tasmania - No idea!

I'd imagine with even Tasmanian Liberals supporting it that it'd win there but maybe I'm wrong

There is really, surprisingly consistent polling support for the Voice in Tasmania that doesn't exist in any other state.  But the pollsters are keen to stress that they are relying on a very small sample size there.  The strength of the 'Yes' vote there is so out of step with the national polling that it certainly raises eyebrows.

But Tasmania is also an underdog state, in general terms, and might not need so much convincing as the rest of the country that a small and marginalised group requires a guaranteed avenue of representation.  The result also fits the general pattern that the smaller the indigenous population in an electorate, the higher the support for 'Yes' will be there.

I'm a little less convinced about the politicians influencing the public in any significant way.  The Liberal party in NSW has largely endorsed the Voice as far as I'm aware.  I also don't get the impression that the current Tasmanian Liberal government is terribly popular.  Every mainland state is run by Labor governments and their endorsements have meant little.  The really fascinating thing about this referendum is that it appears to be failing despite having the backing of corporate Australia, the ABC, a wide cross-section of politicians, and most major cultural institutions.

This referendum is a good example of why direct democracy is bad & stupid.

This referendum is a good example of why direct democracy is bad & stupid.
Governments elected with a minority of the vote (1st preferences in this case), would not be expected to be that democratic towards the majority which voted someone else.

So referendums tend to be the only opportunity for the majority to vent against the minority in power, that's why Parliamentary Governments always lose referendums unless they are geniunely popular.

Newspoll final state breakdown
NSW 41-54
Vic 43-51
Tas 38-55
SA 33-60
WA 28-65
Qld 30-65

Failing in every state.  I think I speak for many Australian politicos when I say that I am really interested to see the actual result in Tasmania...

Will be very interesting to see how badly Yes does in Western Sydney vs regional Australia.

I received the North Fremantle "Voter Time Card".

Awarded the card as the last voter standing in the queue at the time the doors opened.

Utterly confusing experience. Asked the guy who handed it to me what it was, and he did not know. Just said he was just following the 'process'.

He said "Just post it on Atlas forums and ask one of the more intelligent English users why they do it."

I'm resigned to the Yes side losing at this point. Never give Australians a chance to express racism at the ballot box.

But I don't believe this is the last we'll hear of this issue. It won't die after one cut.

Antony Green has called SA for no, meaning the referendum is defeated.

Sydney yes/no vote is basically just map of electorates divided by wealthy and not wealthy.

I knew ABC is biased for YES, but I didn't expect the atmosphere to be bleaker than a funeral.

Mark my words though, this will not be the last we hear about this sort of thing. It will come up again and again.

They pretty clearly are, it's almost unwatchable. Reminds me of the media meltdown here in the UK after the EU referendum.

People who scream that the public broadcaster is biased generally have no other argument and think they are because they're not hearing the exact words they want them to say.

So no, they are not. People think they are because they won't parrot Sky News every hour.
