I have no evidence at all to back this up, but I just have the feeling that being Jewish would hurt a Presidential candidate more than being a woman, or an African-American, or a member of just about any other minority group (except Muslims, of course).

A Jew could be elected president, but probably not Spitzer. Jews are viewed quite a bit more positively than Mormons, Muslims, Atheists, or most other religious minorities.

He might however be a good pick for Attorney General in a future Democratic Administration.

I doubt Spitzer would, but I think a Jew in the mold of Joe Lieberman might.  Remember, Joe Lieberman, by some accounts, should be the outgoing Vice President right now, not Dick Cheney.  True the people voted for Gore and not Lieberman, but if they didn't like Lieberman's Judaism, Gore would have received even fewer votes.  Thats why I don't think Mitt Romney's Mormonism will be a huge issue.
