Jessica Andrews - Who I Am
I started with a song that was a personal statement from Steve Earle and I'll end my posts on this thread with another personal statement song. (Even though Jessica Andrews didn't write it, which is kind of silly, but it's still a wonderful song.)
I didn't have a specific number of songs I wanted to post, but I wanted to get somewhere around 200 and I've posted 216 (there have been a few other songs posted, and I appreciated all of them.) This is exactly 9 songs an hour over a 24 hour period which is about right for a radio station with a host (what's a radio station, granddad?) I'll list all the songs I posted later tonight.
I'm sure there are some songs that I've forgotten, obviously I could have posted every Johnny Cash song, but that wasn't the point. Of the classic country musicians, the only one I haven't posted is George Jones. I'm pretty sure that a survey of other country musicians from the mid 1980s ranked George Jones as the one they thought was the best country musician of all time, but I just don't like him. I wouldn't have posted Johnny Cash's A Boy Named Sue either, stupid song.
I didn't post the Carter Family, but I posted Will the Circle Be Unbroken, and I didn't post either the Chicks or Toby Keith, nothing to do with politics, but I also just don't like them. There is something about female harmonies that I sometimes don't like, I had the same issue with the Indigo Girls from the 1980s for those familiar with them. I like Abba though.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s when the (Dixie) Chicks were huge, I thought to myself "people want to hear traditional country music, and this is what they choose?" This was the era of such amazing traditional country artists like Kelly Willis and Bruce Robinson (The Chicks covered Robinson's Travelin' Soldier which I didn't like.)
At the same time though was the soundtrack to the film 'Oh Brother, Where Art Thou'' which was produced by T Bone Burnett and became a surprise massive hit. I didn't post anything from that, but it's well worth listening to.
Before podcasts and streaming services, there were a number of small internet radio stations. Some times I'd listen to one called Boot Liquor Radio, which played a lot of obscure alternative and traditional country songs including one by Tom Waits that I really liked. I never could remember the name of that song.
Edit to add. I didn't know this, Boot Liquor Radio is still around.
