Head-to-head polls aren't of much value when voters are so far removed from a concrete choice.

It's incredible that we see head-to-head polls in which both Trump and Biden barely hit 40%. (And plenty of polls including third party support put both below 40%.) There is some small proportion of voters who don't know which they would prefer in a rematch, but it's nowhere near one in five.

I was listening to a 538 podcast the other day that suggested that undecideds right now are a pro-Biden group. When they looked at the cross tabs people who are undecided are between “well Biden is old and boring” vs “but I think trump is evil and dangerous” and if push comes to shove will vote Biden. The polling in 2022 showed Democrats won a lot of people who “somewhat disapproved” of Biden.
