I think so. There's something about the guy that media pundits absolutely love.

Remember that BRTD thread we had recently about people who make apologetics for Japanese imperialism because they had a different color of skin than white? Yeah, the same thing on a milder scale.

No, I doubt it. They'll say  he put in  a "solid, yet unspectacular" performance, though.

He is a black Republican. That's more than enough for a media desperate to avoid calling out Republicans for their racism.

So Japan was clearly extremely bad with all their war crimes against other Asian ethnicities, and allied with Nazi Germany, but there's an argument that the failure of an anti racism plank in the League of Nations made them hostile to the US and more likely to go down that path.

That's one possibility. The other is that he says something too ridiculous to be ignored, and it becomes a candidacy-defining gaffe. He has flubbed enough interviews that I would bet on the latter happening at some point.

Maybe not in the first debate, though. The impulse to build up the rising star might win out for the time being, especially if Trump isn't there.

Owning up to one of my bad takes. I honestly can't believe Tim Scott is "The Big Loser" of the debate even in the official narrative given how much the press usually loves him, but he just did not bring his A game and was completely irrelevant. Larry Ellison must wonder what the 35 million dollars got him.

(BTW when Scott was miffed Vivek called everyone bought and sold...Scott's entire campaign is essentially funded by one person. He's more bought and sold than any presidential candidate this cycle).

"Solid, yet unspectacular" is the most journalistic, "saying something-but-saying-nothing" thing I've ever read (much like this post).  You can apply it to literally anything:

"Her margin of victory was solid, yet unspectacular."

"The Eagles' efforts against the Giants were solid, yet unspectacular."

"Starfield is a solid (yet unspectacular) game."
