Offering an amendment:

Quote
BUILD THE WALL ACT

1. The Atlasian government is hereby authorized to expend up to $50 Million per year through 2026 for the acquisition of land adjacent to the southern border with Mexico and the construction thereon of a sturdy, permanent barricade to reduce illegal border crossings.

2. All illegal immigrants currently in Atlasia shall be given full amnesty for entering Atlasia illegally, and shall be placed at the back of the line for citzenship.

3. This act shall take effect immediately.

I co-sponsored this out of respect for my former, and now present, colleague. In general, the proposal is not something I feel strongly about enough to introduce on my own and I believe the NYE amendment improves the bill although the language about putting undocumented immigrants "at the back of the line" seems vague. Don't different cases get processed at different times? I don't think there's a literal line/list of citizenships to be granted in order.

Furthermore, I invite Senator Lord Richard who is serving in this chamber again, to advocate further if he so wishes.

$50 Million per year is a lot of money for basically a few miles of fences that will be built every year. The estimate price of a wall on the Mexican-Atlasian border is 21.6 billion dollars. I suppose there are ways to make it cheaper, but a wall would be less effective with cheaper materials.

By this rate it would take 432 years to build the wall, and with this yearly budget 1/432th of the wall would be built every year, and god knows what the political issues and landscape of the world would look like within 432 years.

My point being this is a gross underestimation of the cost price for the wall and with this amount of funding an unrealistic aim/goal.

Furthermore i do not support building a wall as in the 21st century there are multiple ways of entering Atlasia, in the ground, through the ocean, in the air. Imprisoning all of Latin America is not realistic. I believe immigration is best being dealt via other ways.

As such i do not intend to support this act.

Didn't we already grant amnesty to illegal immigrants a while ago?

I don't see what NYE's amendment accomplishes.

I assume there have been illegal immigrants since then that we haven't granted amnesty to. If that's incorrect, I'll withdraw my amendment.

Why should people who knowingly disobeyed our laws after we already made it easier to become a citizen be rewarded? At that point, why even have laws if we aren't going to enforce them?

The whole point of granting amnesty at the time we did was to help people who have lived here for a long time and have made positive contributions to Atlasia and earned it. Those who have come here since have not done that.

I believe people should live where they want, without barriers to do so. If you don't feel that way, than by all means, vote against my amendment.

Even if you believe the project to cost more, the bill does not have a mechanism for increasing funding beyond the limited amount prescribed in the bill, so that point is moot.

My point is that the bill is being very unrealistic in what it claims it aims to do while creating the idea that building the wall is a cheap project.

And that in general it's a very poorly written bill.
