It’s not that unusual (especially in the 1900s) for a senator to go from a big win to loosing re-election.

Some random examples just looking around;

Jim Sasser (D) won with 65% in 1988 and lost with 42% in 1994 (Tennessee)

Slade Gorton (R) won with 54% in 1980 and lost with 49% in 1986 (Washington)

Mark Andrews (R) won with 70% in 1980 and lost with 49% in 1986 (North Dakota)

William Hathaway (D) won with 53% in 1972 and lost with 34% in 1978 (Maine)

Peter Dominick (R) won with 59% in 1968 and lost with 40% in 1974 (Colorado)
