This voter voted Democratic against all 3 1920s Republicans in their landslide victories, but also voted Republican against FDR in all 4 of his landslide victories. They also did not change political views during this period. What would be some possible reasoning here?

Smith himself? (Had he lived to see the 1944 election?).

Smith himself? (Had he lived to see the 1944 election?).

Probably, I almost wonder if he would have switched parties and made a play for the 44 nomination himself.

A very wealthy, but internationalist Democrat who hated the isolationism of the 1920s era GOP, but also hated the New Deal and likes tariffs (probably lives on the coast).

There were probably very, very few people who switched like that in 1932.

Smith himself? (Had he lived to see the 1944 election?).

This is a good guess, but Smith himself supported Roosevelt in 1932, as did many conservative Democrats who later came to oppose FDR's presidency.

Maybe not Smith himself but I could see this being some staunch Tammany loyalist that just had an intense hatred of FDRs faction of New York Democrats.

Interesting. It sounds like Smith himself would have voted exactly this way then if FDR had given more detail on his New Deal plans in 1932, and if he had lived to see the 1944 election. Same for John W. Davis (who voted FDR, then for the GOP in 1936, 1940, and 1944)
