I assume these came about from people inadvertently misspelling them repeatedly, but then the misspellings stuck.

No, and in fact both countries (and other English-speaking ones) should switch to using purely phonetic spelling.  Although I suppose that would make the National Spelling Bee a lot less interesting. Wink

Standardized spelling in English only came about very gradually and haphazardly. So it's difficult to say whether a certain spelling was a "misspelling" or just a non-traditional or haphazard spelling before roughly the early/mid-19th century.

But to the OP, no.

I prefer -ise to -ize, but that's about it.

I, for one, advocate for the RVTRN to Sumerian cuneiform

I'm going to say no, and I can say this with the authority of someone who has had to write ~100 pages worth of essays in standard British English as an American.

There are more Americans among the native English speakers of the world than there are Britons, so if anything they should be the ones adopting our spelling.

It is interesting for me to listen to the Brit accent Americanize over the course of my lifetime. Now if only the Jersey accent could do the same. Man, I could hardly understand this handsome Italian looking guy at the Union City pool today.

Actually 'ize' is also correct in English as written in Britain and would generally be considered to be slightly more formal. The absolute differences are the ones imposed by American spelling reformers.

Uh, no. Most of the world drives on the same side as the United States. Countries like yours (Australia) are in the minority.

Yeah but due to British colonization, British spelling is used more frequently around the world.
