He was from a border state, had Latino support, Black vs. Latino tension was high with immigration reform, etc.

Not in 2008. It was a bad year for Repubs all-around

McCain's record on immigration was also a bit shaky. He was heavily pushing the 2007 immigration bill. Then he suddenly walked back on it during the primary (which he had to, or he probably doesn't win)
