I'm almost inclined to vote straight ticket Republican now.

I should note a big reason why Chap lost was also redistricting.

His district changed pretty wildly, and brought in the entirety of Falls Church and parts of Fairfax that never had him as their Senator.

Chap's main brand was built on specific retail politicking of his district--once that district changed, and changed towards the Left, things looked bad.

What's interesting now is that the Virginia State Senate will be 37.5% turnover (!) at least after November.

I just can't get over the irony of a socialist supporting one of the most conservative Democrats in the Virginia legislature and also a man who repeatedly engages in Confederate apologism.

What a surprise, somebody who's been a Republican apologist from day one is going to vote Republican

Listen, I think it's one thing to have reasonable disagreements about COVID policy and how we might do better next time, but this dude is like a weirdo Confederate apologist who constantly torpedoed mainstream Democratic priorities from his Titanium D seat. Good riddance. Moreover, this should be a reminder that people who vote for Democrats generally do so because they like liberal policies and want to see them implemented, and acting like a contrarian brainlord is a good way to get kicked out.

For the record, I currently work in Northern Virginia local government, so here's my additional context:

Chap Petersen was (is?) the defense attorney for a local towing company, Advanced Towing, that is infamous in the Arlington/Fairfax County area for predatory towing. To the point where their owner, John O'Neill, is probably the most hated man in Arlington. O'Neill is big on legal action, which is why he hired Peterson to go after the (Democratic) Attorney General's legal suit against Advanced. The court case ended where the Towing company only paid a small fine in penalties because the laws weren't clear enough for more targeted action. O'Neill very prominently declared that he "won" the case, in a manner not unlike Trump.

So anyone associated with Advanced Towing is kind of wounded by association among some people, at least among more engaged citizens.
I can't even name a single towing company in the Twin Cities so it has to be pretty bad.

What exactly do they do though? If it's things like towing people for very minor parking violations wouldn't that be more on the local governments?

You know I just realized that benconstine probably loved this guy (assuming that he wasn't some sort of Covid uber-hawk which I could totally see benconstine being.)

Not in intent, but in effect on the racial gap in education and child well-being it surely deserves the title "Jim Crow 2.0" more than anything else does.

He seemed to have a quirky streak of rebelliousness in him against the woker aspects of the left, which we need more of in the Democratic Party.

However…is anyone actually surprised at this? The guy acted as one would expect someone representing a Trump seat to act. Biden got well over 60% of the vote here. Republicans toss their incumbents out in far less favorable territory than that on a consistent basis just for not being a Trump cultist.

Totally on the wrong issues though. Ruben Gallego openly standing up against "Latinx" is a good example of this. Going to bat for the old name of the Washington Commanders and Confederate statues is not.

According to DRA VA-37 is a Biden 70% district. The Joe Manchin act has it's place but not in a district like this.

There is no irony as Bandit isn't a socialist by any stretch of the mind.

It does. This would be like if Phil Scott were governing Wyoming as the liberal Republican he is. No one should be shocked.

Basically yes, towing for minor/very brief violations.

Virginia is a Dillon Rule state, so a lot of the regulations on towing companies lie on the state level. Hence why the lawsuit I mentioned earlier being a state level issue, as opposed to local: Arlington oddly doesn't have the authority to just ban Advanced Towing or shut them down.

Sad that one of the most sane voices is gone, along wit Morrisey this is a great argument for RCV. But what's even sadder is that some Rep's are even more out of touch. I guess we should be lucky he was able to hold on as long as he did.

Baker, Petersen, and Morrissey all ran in districts that Biden won with huge margins and are all safe D in any scenario.   There's no reason to have moderates in these districts at all.

Morrissey is a pedophile who has been convicted of sex crimes against minors.  His loss is objectively a really good thing regardless of one's ideology.
