Kansas last Dem Senator was elected in 1932, and left office in 1939 shortly before The Wizard of Oz came out.

This is the longest streak of one party being elected to both senate seats ever. Republicans only have to win the 2026 and 2028 Senate elections in Kansas to manage to reach 100 years without electing a Dem Senator barring anyone vacating the seat early. Will Democrats manage to break the streak in time, or is the historic centennial marker of Dems no longer winning in Kansas be written into history?

I think one of Kansas’ Senate seats has only ever elected Republicans.

Marshall's seat has elected two Dems wayback when. Moran's seat has elected two populist party candidates in the late 1800's and elected its only Dem in 1932.

2026 could be a reach opportunity for Democrats if it's a Republican President's midterm and they can recruit Laura Kelly, but other than that, I think Democrats are at least a decade away from being viable in federal elections in Kansas.

With respect to Kelly, she'll be in her mid-to-late 70s at the conclusion of her second gubernatorial term, and I haven't seen any public reports indicating any interest from her in seeking a Senate seat. Thus, if she were to run for Senate in 2026, I think the fundamentals for her would probably not be as good as those for Steve Bullock in 2020.

It's trending Democratic so the opportunity is there for an upset unlike say Tennessee or maybe even Montana nowadays. Circumstances could align, perhaps in a midterm or in a special election before 2032.

Without veering into Dinesh D'Souza territory, if any state party deserves to be cursed well beyond the statute of limitations for its crimes, it's the Kansas Democratic Party.

Yes, it makes me feel somewhat better about South Dakota's streak of only electing Republican governors that began with Bill Janklow's victory in 1978.

Thank God for Wyoming too, it's had an all-Republican congressional delegation for the same length of time.

Bernie Sander’s seat is the only one in the Senate that has never been held by an official Democrat.

If I recall correctly the last time Democrats had a real shot at winning one of the seats was in 1974 when Bob Dole was running for his second term.  He had been behind, mainly due to the anti-Republican Watergate backlash, but he eventually won as a result of demagoging his doctor opponent as an abortionist.
