The GOP primary is comprised of four "lanes" - establishment moderate, establishment conservative, insurgent moderate and insurgent conservative.

DeSantis belongs in the insurgent moderate quadrant along with Trump, but RDS leans a bit more to the establishment side.  Pence/Scott is angling for the establishment conservative lane, while Haley looks like she may be going establishment moderate.

If Desantis is the nominee, the question is how many people would write in Trump, if he is not on the ballot, or vote for him is he runs and is on the ballot.

Anyway, I don't think the two of them would be that different as far as policy goes.
Perhaps, DeSantis would be more willing to concede, if he loses.

If Trump is in prison he can still run, but might be less likely to be the nominee.

His lane is "crusading culture-warrior who isn't Trump" which is why I've been saying he's a weak primary contender and a worse GE nominee.

He's not Trump, and he's not a plausible successor to Trump. Not even in a "right message, wrong man" sense.

He can't do "I'm  sane and have ethics, but Trumpers will vote for me" because he's publicly disproven all of them.

Nor can he do, "religious passably decent human being" because he's tossed that aside in favor of being the standard bearer for culture wars.

He can't even do "competent executive, who cares what his beliefs are", again, because he threw that on the culture warrior bonfire.

DeSantis chose to define himself as an obsessed anti-"woke" zealot, because it got him lots of media attention. But the cost of that is he doesn't have a lane, he has a narrow rut that he's not going to be able to leave.

DeSantis is a true bona fide Trumpian but with a slightly less obnoxious, more banal, insecure personality. This is the new mainstream in the GOP's ranks, but it's all surface level.

By that standard, OSR is a far-right extremist.

DeSantis isn’t running a culture war campaign for POTUS. He will pivot for the general electorate.

DeSantis's voters are mostly the same as those who voted Ted Cruz in 2016.

Very intellectual, very conservative, a clear minority of people.

You mean "intellectual." And that still might not be enough quotations marks.

The remains of conservative academia, think tanks, and true believers to conservatism.
