Regardless of who won, a DLC moderate Democrat was bound to win the '92 nomination....

McGovern, Carter's reelection loss, and Mondale and Dukakis' disaster in the 1970s and 1980s had to lead to a revival in the 1990s.

With hindsight, I would probably go with Bob Kerrey or Jerry Brown. Bill Clinton is a smart politician, one of the smartest of all time, but his personal life led the country to tragedy in the 2000s with the Iraq War and Bush's election.

If I were to rank choice vote with Hindsight:

1. Tom Harkin
2. Bob Kerrey
3. Bill Clinton
4. Jerry Brown (He was in a weird place at that time. I'd vote for the Jerry Brown of the 2010's over Clinton or Kerrey though)
5. Paul Tsongas

I GUESS Tom Harkin, then Jerry Brown even though he was still too moderate for my tastes back then. I'm a firm believer that Bill Clinton's presidency set in motion a chain of events that became our present chaos, partially because of his scandals and partially because of the misogynistic backlash at Hillary, but if given the chance to try and reverse that, I would avoid voting for Slick Willy.

1992 is a good lesson in how the political climate can change quickly. A lot of the best players stayed out because they of course thought that H. W. would cruise to re-election.

And in that context, WJC deserves credit for being one of the first to sense that Bush Snr might in fact be vulnerable behind the impressive looking polling numbers.

He was very likely the right candidate for that election, his subsequent presidency is a different topic.

This. 1988 and 1992 were realignment elections.
