The real solution is to impose a maximum wage on lawyers. As a lawyer I would happily support a maximum wage. Most lawyers are sickenly money-crazed.
Attorneys know how to game the federal and state statutory fee structures, and they'll quietly lobby for a seemingly small change from an objective to subjective standard of Attorney Fee Arrangements. I've literally watched Attorney Groups successfully lobby modifications to the laws in Disaster Relief Bills, because nobody wants to be responsible for holding-up relief funds. I've worked at firms where we were allowed to base our attorney's fees on the amount our buddies would charge, and we'd provide them affidavits to justify their attorney fees. These are supposedly 'reasonable' fees. The statutory guarantee of our fees incentivizes larger firms to prolong weak cases with relatively little effort and time spent on clients, particularly when working in fields like Fair Wage laws. In family law, Judges have an insanely biased incentive to prolong cases and discourage settlement, because part of the legal fees fund Judiciary Retirement funds. Obviously, Attorneys and Judges have an inventive not to 'rock the boat' by advocating against these laws even though we're in the best position to effectively challenge these statutes. Unless we're stepping on the profits of large industries, and that's a whole other problem.
