McCain might have won if he had picked anyone other than Palin (and responded slightly more competently to the financial crisis).

Dole had the problem of Perot running to his right, and being tethered to Newt Gingrich. The only way Republicans could have lost by more in 1996 is Gingrich was the nominee himself.
