Both were huge GOP landslides but Mass voted for McGovern in '72 but voted for Reagan in '84.

Was Reagan just more appealing than Nixon in Mass.?  Did Sargent Shriver being a Kennedy make the difference for McGovern?

The late 70s and the 1980 primary, broke the Democratic Party in a way that wasn't the case in 1972. This provided an opening that wasn't present previous, especially with more ethnic white voters in places like Massachusetts, that the Kennedy's would have kept in line previously.

Reagan appealed to both WWC Democrats and wealthy suburbanites in the state enough to put him over top.
