I can't really comprehend how this map results in a Republican victory, even in 1976.

There's not many states in which Ford did worse than you might expect based upon the county map. Carter was a lot stronger in rural areas than more recent Democrats but it often wasn't enough to offset Fords strength in suburban areas, and Ford o/c did better in urban areas than more recent Republicans.
