I don't see where you're getting 44% natural origin from, as I'm seeing just 16%. Taking a look at the poll, the better breakdown would be:

• 46% purposeful lab leak
• 20% accidental lab leak
• 16% natural origin
• 17% unsure

Now I think that a purposeful lab leak makes not much sense at all, and I think that some might have interpreted "released on purpose" as released to the rest of China and the international community rather than from the lab, i.e. "failed to properly contain within Wuhan." That seems much more plausible of an interpretation (assuming most Americans aren't that jingo-istic with respect to China but who knows).

Accidental lab leak still seems way too low to me, but honestly who cares about American opinions on this. The real geopolitical battle is still in economic soft power.
