so basically the gop supermajority called a surprise education committee meeting during today's house lunch break (with the mics on the floor off) to revive a don't say gay bill that had been dormant for a month and in a thirty minute session amended it to include the provisions of another omnibus anti-trans bill (a gender-affirming care ban--including forced detransitioning for youth already receiving care, bathroom bill, pronoun policing and more rolled into one) that had been considered by the senate yesterday but didn't pass. then the house and senate both moved to pass the new bill immediately. today was the last day to pass bills before the veto period.

Hopefully they can get enough Republicans to avoid overriding Beshear’s veto.

Unfortunately to overturn a veto in Kentucky requires only a simple majority in both houses.

And regardless they have 80%+ of the chambers in both houses anyway. Hard to get it below even the congressional threshold (2/3).

Wait, the don't say gay bill was already dead for a month and then they tacked on the anti-trans bill? Which made it pass?

Jesus Christ Republicans are stupid.

Really? What’s the point of having a governor, then?

Budget bills in Kentucky have to originate from the Governor, so the legislature can't pass them over the veto. Rather the Governor proposes the budget the legislature voted on. The Governor also obviously makes appointments and has a pretty far ranging executive order power. Bevin was this able to push through some horrid things like his welfare work requirements that even most of the legislative Republicans didn't support. Beshear repealed them his first day in office.

This cruel bill will sadly become law thanks to the simple majority threshold for vetoes.

The article said it passed 75-22 (75% of the whole body) in the House and 30-7 (79% of the whole body) in the Senate.

example #4555668599474893 of the GOP ignoring real problems and attacking marginalized communities with no power cause- lets face it, what else would the GOP run on if not attacking minorities? their incredibly unpopular economic agenda? that sends billions to other countries while calling its own citizens socialist for demanding better domestic conditions. just lmao, how sick.

https://apnews.com/article/transgender-care-bill-kentucky-legislature-e7c0bfb0e6cdfb1144451efe677108d6

Quote
Republican lawmakers in Kentucky on Wednesday swept aside the Democratic governor’s veto of a bill regulating some of the most personal aspects of life for transgender young people — from banning access to gender-affirming health care to restricting the bathrooms they can use.

The votes to override Gov. Andy Beshear’s veto were lopsided in both legislative chambers — where the GOP wields supermajorities — and came on the next-to-last day of this year’s legislative session. The Senate voted 29-8 to override Beshear’s veto. A short time later, the House completed the override on a vote of 76-23.

As emotions surged, some people protesting the bill from the House gallery were removed and arrested after their prolonged chanting rang out in the chamber. The protesters, their hands bound, chanted “there’s more of us not here” as they waited to be taken away from the Capitol.

Yup, and that's completely ludicrous and pointless.
