Senate clears key hurdle to advance Eric Garcetti’s nomination to be ambassador to India.

... The chamber voted voted 52 to 42 to break a filibuster on the former Los Angeles mayor’s nomination, a sign that the previously embattled nomination, which had been in limbo, has now won a critical mass of support.

You mean the mayor who encouraged his constituents to snitch on people during the lockdowns.
No, absolutely not

The sexual misconduct alleged coverup seems to have been a nothing burger, he opposed a NIMBY measure, but I do prefer career diplomats in ambassadorial posts. I’d probably say Yes, he was a pretty ok Mayor.

If I was a Democratic Senator and he came up for a floor vote, then sure. But I really dislike political appointees for ambassadorial positions, especially one as important as India.

Not to mention him shutting down COVID testing sites in the height of the pandemic because people were being mean to the cops.

Nothing short of terrorism.

I find it strange the admin has let this go on for so long, this ambassadorship will have remained empty for most of bidens term to a major nation

When Covid started I was doing a caregiving job for a 90 year old man. He watched TV at the kitchen table, and as I was preparing meals for him I always had to listen to the right wing news. Eric Garcetti would come on the air frequently to talk about Covid and wearing masks and all that. And our duty.

Let me tell you he was the most boring speaker I have ever heard. I couldn't relate to him in any way. And for that reason I would be a no vote for him for anything pretty much.

Eric Garcetti finally got the ambassadorship he wanted.

... The Senate voted 52 to 42 Wednesday to confirm Garcetti as the next U.S. ambassador to India. Seven Republicans joined all but three Democrats present in approving him for the post.

He got it. He is in.
Final confirmation past. He is on his way to India.

I thought Garcetti died holding his breath at some sports stadium, during some sort of mask mandate situation. Apparently he's still in the game. Okay then.

Criteria to consider:,
Is he fluent in Hindi?
Is he knowledgable about the culture?
Does he have a diplomatic demeanor?
What qualifications does he have that show he is ready to be an ambassador?

If the answers are yes, yes, yes and many then Ill vote to confirm him. If not, I will vote to deny.

I wouldn't regard this as a decisive factor for the following reasons:

-There have been plenty of ambassadors who are/were not proficient in the language(s) of the country they have been assigned to.
-In India there are tons of languages spoken depending on the region, and there are even some regions (mostly in southern India) where very few people speak Hindi (and are also hostile toward the idea of having Hindi imposed on them). In fact, they've even had one prime minister who was not proficient in Hindi.

No, I wouldn't have voted to confirm Garcetti. He's not qualified to be the ambassador to India or any country.

Probably yes.

Regardless of what you support or oppose his nomination, it's ridiculous the process has been dragged out for so long. Nobody can be serious about holding key ambassadorships open for that long. We're more than 2 years into the Biden admin. Come on. We're not talking about some random country with 2 million people that's thousands of miles away.

I’m Indian-American and fully support close ties between the US and India, but would have voted against him for this reason alone.

It shows that he’s an elitist asshole who thinks of his constituents as dumb rubes. I get that a lot of politicians probably think like this, but he stands out for how shameless he was about it.
