Because this is in US General Discussion the Turkey quake is disqualified for not being a US story. It's a tossup between East Palestine and Silicon Valley Bank, I voted for SVB because that might have notable repercussions nationwide as opposed to regionally.

Every month seems to be bringing something new to be focused on this year, so for today it's the SVB, but I don't know if or how long that lasts.

Let me address the others:

Speakership battle: was a big story but no longer relevant.
Biden’s documents: No one cares anymore except the sort of types who actually care about Hunter Biden or the Durham probe.
George Santos: Little relevance besides almost certainly ending his political career next year, but a freshman House member having no future is not a huge story.
Tyre Nichols: Was a pretty big story but has ran out of steam although it could be revived during the officers' trials.
Chinese Spy Balloon: Also was a big story but no longer really talked about, could be revived if further balloons are discovered but that hasn't yet happened.
Turkey earthquake: As noted is not a US story.
East Palestine: Pretty big story but mostly just for regional importance.
Tucker/Jan 6 footage: Again no one cares except the same type of people obsessed with Hunter Biden.
2024 primaries: Nothing interesting has happened yet.

The Chinese balloon story seems to have already faded and its far too early to make presumptions about the Silicon Valley Bank story (Not to mention even this story is starting to fade).

At this present moment in time I picked Turkey earthquake. The "Not a US story' excuse is just that

SVB and the banking crisis will be the story of 2023 barring anything exceptional.  This will have lasting implications and likely trigger a recession

Trump's imminent indictment(s) should be an option here. It hasn't happened yet, but it's clear as day at this point that he's headed to at least one trial, if not two or three. Many people have believed for centuries that American presidents would forever be above the law. Heck, some still do. The cultural awakening from that belief is going to be seismic.

In my (not at all representative) world, the biggest stories have been the Turkey earthquake, the balloons, and probably the battle for Bakhmut in 3rd place. For the US specifically, aside from the balloons, probably the speakership battle, George Santos (mainly as a lolcow), and then probably the recent banking stuff. But the only reason I hear anything about the bank stuff is because my mom works in tech. If not for her, there's a good chance I'd have already forgotten about SVB.
