China
EU
Japan
India
UK
Canada
South Korea
Russia

Larger economy -> Larger danger

By that standard, the Mongols were never a threat to anyone since Mongolia had a small economy when Genghis Khan was just getting started.
The Goths were never a threat to the Roman's because they had a much smaller economy.
The Macedonians were no threat to the Persians.
North Korea is no threat to South Korea because of its small economy.

Etc. Etc.

Your comparisons are from hundreds and thousands of years ago. They don't apply today.

North Korea is from hundreds of years ago?

Nope.  That assumes Putin does not go nutter and launch all his nukes.

That's why they are the biggest short-term risk.

Earlier today I read that Russia, China, and Iran have started to hold naval maneuvers together in the Gulf of Oman. So in a world that has an increasing tendency to think in some form of "blocs" again, it's perhaps an outdated concept to asign the "rival" role to one specific country.

While Russia's and China's interests do not completely align with each other and China hasn't supplied arms to the Ukrainian battlefield yet (only Iran does that of the aforementioned countries), they are probably still closer today than they were after the Sino-Soviet split of the 1960s.

It has a name, it's called the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (with Iran expected to formally accede probably sometime this year).

If the US ignored Russia, literally nothing would happen. They're irrelevant and caring about it is cringe Reaganposting.
The only reason they're relevant is nukes and Putin won't use them
In fact I think the US should ally with Russia (not militarily tho) against the EU. The EU is economically the bigger threat and needs to be dealt with. Ofc the biggest enemy is China.

What? Why?

The EU is one of the greatest international organizations ever created and has led to an increase in the quality of life in the region, particularly in post-Communist Eastern Europe.

Russia is a declining, decaying, authoritarian hellhole rife with alcoholism and depression.

Exactly. Russia isn't a threat cause they're hopeless. The EU is the threat because they are an economic competitor.

"At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide."

I just had the epiphany that not every Internet post an edgy teenager has written constitutes a meritful and thoughtful analysis of complex International relations. I'm referring to Shaula, not you. Yours is fine IMO. In case Shaula's case I hope that she has still plenty of time to grow and learn.

If you had asked this question 20 years back, I bet that the majority of Americans would have said right wing Islam (or just Islam for the more bigoted ones). It is interesting that not one upthread says so now.

As far as the original question, my vote is for China. China is an economic success story by any measure, and leaders generally get away with whatever they want on the international stage or freedoms-wise if their people are fed and happy.  I'm not saying Russians are worse off economically, but their trajectory is down and they certainly are less happy.

China and some western European countries are much bigger threats - both economically and militarily.

Not Russia or Mexico as the media seems to think.

France, Spain, Italy, and Greece are pretty much full-on fascist.

They very well are, but only in the sense that an old lady with a cane can still bully her son 6 ft-something son.

But they're literally the opposite of a threat, they're our allies.
