Now I know you might say China, but at the very least China is more or less dependent on the US, so it doesn't really have to balls to go against it.

When it comes to Russia, it has the will, and capabilities to be an effective pariah state, and is bold enough to launch wars of conquest in the 21st century. It's also a more nihilist society so they feel like they got nothing to lose by going against NATO/USA "Why do we need a world if Russia is not in it?"

They also have the largest nuclear arsenal in the world, dwarfing China.

Russia and China are. India has the chance to become one but they’re still feeding their best to the US.

I believe BG-NY said his ideal foreign policy is "America first, America alone."

I can certainly understand the America first part, but America alone would be nothing short of catastrophic if implemented. One needs friends to survive.

By that standard, the Mongols were never a threat to anyone since Mongolia had a small economy when Genghis Khan was just getting started.
The Goths were never a threat to the Roman's because they had a much smaller economy.
The Macedonians were no threat to the Persians.
North Korea is no threat to South Korea because of its small economy.

Etc. Etc.

I'll probably settle on "Canada" and "visigoths" as my final answer.

If the US ignored Russia, literally nothing would happen. They're irrelevant and caring about it is cringe Reaganposting.
The only reason they're relevant is nukes and Putin won't use them
In fact I think the US should ally with Russia (not militarily tho) against the EU. The EU is economically the bigger threat and needs to be dealt with. Ofc the biggest enemy is China.

Yes, because nobody knows what the world looks like 20 years from now. Russia is THE clear and present danger. They have shown willingness to challenge the west both ideologically and militarily in a way that only North Korea can come close to rivalling, and North Korea does not have any resemblance of the military strength of Russia, nor does North Korea have any economic sway over the west. Furthermore, while Russias military strength has been questioned due to their failure to invade Ukraine, Russia still has enough nuclear weapons to basically make the planet inhabitable and they have leadership that may infact be mad enough to actually use that option.

So yeah, the only answer to this poll that makes any sense is a resounding YES, and I am frankly appalled that this is the minority view on this forum who really ought to know better.

Russia is a problem and I support the Biden admins decision to wage a proxy war against them since the opportunity presented itself but China is the systemic rival and the next three decades at least will be defined by our rivalry with them.

No, China is. China actually has a long-term plan to challenge US power in the world. Russia is actually more similar to a nuclear Iran - an aggressive, ruthless problem that doesn't quite have a path to victory but can make the world worse for everyone in the process.

That's China, Russia acts as it does because it wants to be what China is...but it is dangerous because of that.
