Recently, the NBA has been embroiled in an ongoing controversy over who the MVP is. Jokic (white) is going for three in a row, but many like noted former player and social commentator Kendrick Perkins say that jokic is winning his mvps due to racism because his teams have no playoff success, plays no defense, and is exalted by white voters.

Meanwhile, Giannis and embiid are held to a higher standard and are not granted the same leeway by white voters in terms of not playing defense or lack of playoff success in embiids case and so are victims here. Similar arguments have been made about dirk stealing an mvp from Kobe rip, Nash stealing shaqs mvps, and Larry bird stealing from magic and Moses Malone

Who is your mvp? Should Nash jokic and bird return their mvps? Has the nba gone too far

Jokic deserves to win as of today, but Giannis can close the season out strong.

Nash deserved both of his MVPs. I would say Dirk did not (would go Duncan in 07), and Bird probably did not deserve to win three (that said, Moses was a bit overrated). We don’t have +/- data from the 80s so it’s harder to tell.

At this moment it’s to close to say who deserves the MVP between Giannis and Jokic given how close the race is imo . I’d give the slight edge to Jokic but things can easily change between now and the end of the season .

Anyway Dirk didn’t steal the MVP from Kobe in 07. Dirk had an extremely impressive regular season in 07 and absolutely deserved the MVP . It’s a regular season award , so his first round choke shouldn’t be taken into account . Now I dont think Nash deserved either of his MVP as Shaq deserved it in 05 and Kobs deserved it in 06.

Kobe was never a top 3 player in the league anyhow. In 08, KG, LeBron, and CP3 were all better. 01 playoffs is probably the only time he has a credible argument, but when you include the season in its totality, doesn’t pass the smell test.

Fully disagree, he definitely was top 3 from 06-10 with the potential exception of 07. In 2006 he took a horrific team (Smush Parker , Luke Walton and Kwame Brown ) to 45 wins and if you include the playoffs , the lakers were one fluke Tim Thomas buzzer beater away from beating the Suns in the playoffs . He clearly was better than Nash that year and really the only person who you could argue was better imo was Wade but he had a far better team around him as well .

2008 was Kobe overall best season as keep in mind the Lakers were looking like contenders even before the Gasol trade when they had Bynum and just adding Gasol mid season made them the best team in the west . His playoff run was amazing as well given how he easily dispatched teams like the Nuggets , Jazz and Spurs  and he averaged over 30 points a game in the entire post season with 5.6 APG and  5.7 RPG a game despite facing one of the best defenses ever in Boston .

2009 LeBron was better and you can argue Wade was but I don’t know who else can be considered top 3 and in 2010 again only LeBron was clearly better . Post Jordan era(1999-2011) is who I consider top 3 every year (including playoffs here so best player may not very well deserve MVP)

1999: 1. Duncan 2. Malone 3. Shaq
2000: 1. Shaq 2. Malone 3. Duncan(this is probably the biggest gap ever lol)
2001: 1. Shaq 2. Duncan 3. Iverson
2002: 1. Duncan 2. Shaq 3. Kidd
2003: 1. Duncan 2. Garnett 3. McGrady
2004: 1. Garnett 2. Duncan 3. Shaq
2005. 1. Shaq 2. Nash 3. Dirk
2006: 1. Kobe 2. Wade 3. Dirk
2007: 1. Duncan 2. Nash 3. Dirk(Dirk deserved mvp though)
2008. 1. Kobe 2. Paul 3. Garnett (tossup between KG and LeBron here)
2009: 1. LeBron 2. Wade 3. Kobe
2010: 1. LeBron 2. Kobe 3.  Howard
2011: 1. Dirk 2. Howard 3. Rose

MVP is a regular season award, so I’m not holding the playoff lost against the Bean.

Dude was fundamentally a chucker and a mediocre bad shot maker.

Speaking of Nash…swap he and Kobe and I think the Lakers have a better record every year.

There were years you could certainly say this but I don’t think you can in 06 given how horrific his team was . Like Bill Simmons here has a good test to see how important someone is :

http://www.espn.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/060414

Quote
Question No. 3: If you replaced every MVP candidate with a decent player at their position for the entire season, what would be the effect on their teams' records?

Answer: If you replaced Kobe with a decent 2-guard (someone like Jamal Crawford) for the entire 2005-06 Lakers season, they would have won between 15 and 20 games. I can say that in complete confidence. Terrible team. When Smush Parker and Kwame Brown are your third- and fourth-best players, you shouldn't even be allowed to watch the playoffs on TV. Throw Kobe in the mix and they're headed for 45 wins. So he's been worth 25 victories for them. Minimum.

Also how does Nash make the Lakers better as the Lakers absolutely needed a 30 PPG scorer to really have a chance to win a good amount of games given there is nobody else on the team who was good enough to really take on the offensive load

Yeah, not recognizing Jokić/Embiid/Giannis is BRTD-tier cultural unfamiliarity.

Social commentator and nba player Kendrick Perkins calls fellow former player Jj Redick ‘Elvis’ implying Redick (white) had stolen his nba fame similar to how many say Elvis stole rock and roll from black musicians

Has the nba lost the narrative?

I think all three guys in the OP will finish top 25 all-time BTW. Embiid and Jokic in particular look great in impact metrics.

I can't believe people are actually taking the bait on this crap.

Now ESPN is going to give Kendrick Perkins a huge contract and we'll never be rid of him.

Idiot talking heads on ESPN are not the NBA.

Frankly the NBA needs to stop promoting ESPN at all if it's going to humiliate the league and fabricate racial controversy like this.

Boring take: They're all fantastic players, and I don't envy the position of those who have the responsibility of actually choosing between them.

If Perkins didn’t get injured in game 6 of the 2010 finals , the Celtics almost certainly win that year . Keep in mind when Perkins went down , the Lakers got a massive rebounding advantage in both games 6 and 7 which was critical in them winning that series .

Given how close game 7 was , there is no way they win it without a huge rebounding advantage due to the fact that the entire Lakers offense played terribly that night as well .

Perkins seems like a bit of a moron, I'm sorry. He can be entertaining enough, but that is mostly because his takes are usually pretty ridiculous.

I would vote for Giannis but I'm pretty sure the kind of person who tries to find racism in NBA MVP voting would also think I was racist.
