I’ve been watching the CBS 5 local news and they have been covering the story about how there have been four police shootings within a five day period in the Phoenix area.

What is your opinion of the police in the United States in general? I believe they are horrible in general, except for the Capitol Hill Police Department.

Good in theory, horrible in practice.

While policing is something that is necessary, I have come to the conclusion that - at least in America - the profession seems to bring out the worst in people.

Law enforcement is a necessary component of any functioning society, but the way that police function in the United States today is completely unacceptable and we deserve better.

It depends on the particular agency.

I do think that policing is a lot better in America than in any number of places.  Policing is more "professionalized" here than in many areas.  If you think that's a buzzword, look at countries where you see film clips of police chasing people and firing at them as they flee (armed or not).

Police is too decentralized in the US.

police are but a reflection of the society from which they arise

I saw an interesting proposal on sec rant where like in Naruto the uchicha clan were given complete control over konohas police force, perhaps all cops should be minorities only to improve relations with the wider public

The modern American approach to policing - us vs. them mentality, cops are not "civilians", culture of violence, armed like gendarmes but not adequately trained for it, police as enforcers for "the man", often disconnected from the communities where they work, baked-in biases, a for-profit justice system, etc - is fundamentally broken. People who choose to become cops are willingly joining a broken system. They are complicit in the bad outcomes the system produces, but those bad outcomes are routinely ignored by everyone except some fringe types until something really bad goes virally public... and then one or several front-line police get thrown under the bus (sometimes deservedly so), but the underlying broken system is never fixed, nor is there any serious effort made to fix it.

Mass policing is based. The most policed countries in the world tend to be the safest.

Interesting perspective.
What countries come to mind here, in regards to having *less* professionalization?

Bosnia.

I took a photo there and the Police took my camera off me.

When I complained, they said "This is not the US and you are not John Wayne".

Largely carried by Sting, even though his solo career has never matched up to the band as a whole.

Expectations as to the police may be unrealistic. How do police do in other nations with violence levels similar to the US?

In the bourgeoisie paradise that is Hoboken, the cops seem to do not much at all except collect their paychecks. In Hudson, the cops are super nice, follow all the rules (they have to), but have an almost perfect record of not solving any serious crimes, including murder, even though I am told that the identity of the murderers is well known. Some did subsequently die in gang shootouts over drug turf wars.
