These remarks fall so much into the ludicrousness category they ought to be ignored.

Anyone who says this should be expelled from congress and banned from ever holding public office again.

The actual quote from the article:

Quote
“You’ve got people saying I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to be in here,” Hawley said this week. “They didn’t do anything wrong. They didn’t assault anybody. They didn’t engage in any acts of violence. They stayed within the velvet rope lines or whatever. And they’ve been charged with with trespass. I mean I imagine those people have got good claims, I assume, to litigate cases.”

During his speech where he continued to object to the presidential results in Pennsylvania after the mob had delayed the certification of the election, Hawley said they should be punished. He reiterated that statement this week. “There were definitely people who weren’t tourists,” Hawley said. “I mean, there’s no doubt about that there are people who committed crimes. So I mean, people who committed acts of violence and who engaged in crime should be prosecuted.”

"The actual quote from the article" is, coming from someone who was there during the attack and thus knows damn well that the rioters had to violently attack walls of police to get into the capitol, a shameless lie meant to disingenuously reframe the attack on the capitol and the peaceful transfer of power as petty vandalism. It's pretty clear(at least to me) that hawley wanted the attack to succeed, and he's probably hopeful that a second attack could go better for his ilk then the first.

It's extremely hard to take America's system of government seriously when a member of the legislature can openly collaborate with a coup attempt to reverse an election and still gets to keep his job

According to Josh Hawley, violence and property destruction are not acts of wrongdoing.

Unless you’re black, then it’s a dangerous riot.

Okay, cool.

So if Biden loses in 2024, his supporters are free to do the exact same thing.

It's just mindboggling how still so many people apparently fail to see through this hypocrisy. It's just like Republicans run around and claim they're pro-police, when January 6 rioters are responsible for law enforcement officers to die or be beaten with fists and flag poles. I guess pro-police for them means only the small minority of officers who betray their oath by shooting unarmed black people.

Yeah. According to what they're saying. That being said, the right wing these days says a lot of things in bad faith, so if this were to actually happen, and you were attempt to hold Hawley to this quote, he would shift the goalposts and flip-flop. As I've said a lot recently, this is why dialogues don't go anywhere anymore. That requires two sides engaging in good faith.

It's just code for "pro police when they do things we like or align with us politically, otherwise neutral or even anti-police".

They've always been extreme hypocrites. Just remember how they attacked Bill Clinton for his moral shortcomings and even impeached him. That was nothing compared to Trump and they went along with it.

Depending on how close it is, sure. I think Gore’s supporters should have been louder in 2000. Preferably without the violence from the small minority.

Are these people so f*n dumb that they believe they can just enter the Capitol? I mean, give me a break. Maybe these people are that dumb though.

Even if they entered without being violent and were just kind of wandering around, they were trespassing on government property and posing an immense security threat. And they HAD to have known that they were only able to gain access in the first place because of others violently pushing their way in.

Playing dumb isn't going to help these people, or at least I hope it won't. And Hawley is further complicit by defending these people and trying to gaslight others into believing they're innocent.

Lock the non-violent ones up for a few years, that should be plenty. They're lucky they didn't get a bullet from entering the building.

Hawley just seems to think Ashli Babbitt’s life matters as much as Mitt Romney’s or Mike Pence’s. All Americans created equal.

Everyone's life matters, but there are consequences to being a domestic terrorist.

I wouldn’t call Michael Byrd a terrorist. I am looking forward to proceedings against him in 2025, though.
