This defunds company towns. The South banned ours last year but Fremont and Lincoln still technically allow for them.

Wasn't the Southern bill specifically written to apply to Disney?
Since that already passed, what effect would this have on the rest of the country?

Will defunding company towns actually help anyone in the long run? If we're taking Ron DeSantis's lead here, then it's worth noting that the original deal they made with Disney made doing business less expensive for both parties, and now DeSantis is filling the board with yesmen (this isn't in the bill, but I do not want to repeat Florida's mistakes nationally).

I'll vote for the bill because IIRC the South already took over Disney World, though I still argue was a foolhardy decision because pre-DeSantis the agreement between Florida and the theme park was a mutually beneficial arrangement that provided tax revenue for the state/region as well as less spending on policing and other essential services since Disney already paid for them, in exchange for Disney being allowed to control, plan, and maintain the park the way it wants to. But Disney World is a special case given that it's a theme park the size of Manhattan.

Otherwise, I'm fine with abolishing all the other company towns.

I support the idea behind this legislation, however I wonder if this is the best way to handle contemporary company towns. Going by the traditional definition of a company town, and from the list posted previously by Senator R, Lake Buena Vista and Reedy Creek are only joined by two small mining towns in Arizona. Most of the others are formerly owned or were once built by commercial interests.

Massive companies still do wield an overwhelming degree of power in certain small towns, but that is less so due to real property and more so because they are the sole employer. There was a story a few years ago about Nissan workers in Canton, MS, rejecting a vote to join the UAW specifically because of a fear-driven ad campaign from the company. Without resorting to full-on firing of union activists (ahem, Starbucks), Nissan essentially threatened to close down its assembly plant and leave the town without its largest employer. I'd like to see this bill amended to focus more on combating this sort of unequal power distribution in modern-day company towns.

I hereby cast a proxy vote of Aye for Senator NC Yankee who has authorized me to do so due to the unfortunate personal circumstances that have befallen him. I believe Senator Yankee would vote for this bill since he is a strong supporter of economic competition and also a strong opponent of monopoly. If he is able to vote on this before the vote closes or if his seat is vacated and he is replaced before the vote closes, please recognize that vote instead, Mr. PPT.

Also, on this bill and any other votes in which I must make a proxy vote, if anyone is aware of public comments of Senator Yankee, on each issue at hand in general, to the contrary to my belief of how he would vote, I would appreciate it if you could let me know so I can change the proxy vote to reflect that.

I object to this counting of this proxy vote on the grounds that proxy voting is not sanctioned by the rules of the Senate. If the PPT, or Deputy PPT, wish to count this vote, please ask for the suspension of the rules.
