The reasons I'm asking is because there is stuff that is sort of known but not super well known about his divorce in 1979 where there's all sorts of crazy allegations (like sleeping with his stepdaughter). The internet wasn't as big of a thing then and most of the people who would write about the allegations were fringe characters (William Pierce types) so would it have come out?

you don't need that to be on the supreme court. Like Hugo Black didn't have any of the credentials you associate with a SC justice and he was a well respected jurist. Maybe another hypothetical would be if he nominated him for the eleventh circuit. Would someone like Orrin Hatch try digging up that info or were circuit nominees less of a big deal then.

Another question is - was the SPLC hated by conservatives back then? My assumption was that it wasn't until the 2010s that conservatives started to hate it.
