for either the Ginsburg or Breyer seat or if Stevens had decided to retire in the 90s? The reasons I'm asking is because there is stuff that is sort of known but not super well known about his divorce in 1979 where there's all sorts of crazy allegations (like sleeping with his stepdaughter). The internet wasn't as big of a thing then and most of the people who would write about the allegations were fringe characters (William Pierce types) so would it have come out?

Also, for those that don't know - Dees was founder and president until 2019 of the splc.

He wasn't qualified. First of all, you need to go to a national law school and have experience as a federal judge.

Top 14 schools create judges, Top 50 schools create corporate lawyers, Top 100 create cops and government lawyers, and the ones left near the bottom create your trial lawyers.

you don't need that to be on the supreme court. Like Hugo Black didn't have any of the credentials you associate with a SC justice and he was a well respected jurist. Maybe another hypothetical would be if he nominated him for the eleventh circuit. Would someone like Orrin Hatch try digging up that info or were circuit nominees less of a big deal then.

Another question is - was the SPLC hated by conservatives back then? My assumption was that it wasn't until the 2010s that conservatives started to hate it.

Kagan was never a federal judge. The traditional SCOTUS qualifications are just that, traditions, and many of them are quite recent.

Conservatives have always hated the SPLC.

She was on the Supreme Court for a couple years before she was appointed.
