Is it correct that if a faculty member at a public school leads students in a prayer that is general and not exactly based in any particular religion, that is permitted?

Basically I'd like to know what prayer or expression of religious faith in the public schools is not permitted at the present time based on the Engel vs. Vitale ruling and subsequent rulings, such as in the case: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennedy_v._Bremerton_School_District

If there was for example a local tragedy involving a student and there was an emergency assembly held to provide support to the other students, could the principal say, "I'd like to now pray and any of you that wish you join me, please do"?

As long as it's not coerced, yes under Kennedy, no under previous jurisprudence.

I might move this to the Constitution & Law board.
