State Representative Marvin Abney is in.

I could be wrong, but I think Abney is currently the only black candidate. That might be relevant in the primary.

Nelson Aldritch's ghost has registered as a Democrat and is joining in the race as well. He says there isn't enough candidates and people don't have enough choices to vote for. They need to be able to have a ghost in the race! So he claims.
He is running on his record of progressive reform and taxing the rich, through the income tax.
(just joking)

This stampede can't let a Republican vulture a win via primary lockout, can it?

Thankfully, it seems this is a simple separate party primary, leading to general election. So there will only be one Dem candidate...

Also Abney isn’t the only black in the race, there’s also Biah and I believe Matos is Afro-Latino

Businessman Don Carlson becomes the "lucky" thirteenth Democrat to enter the race.

Quote
Jamestown businessman Don Carlson announced Sunday he is jumping into the Democratic primary to replace outgoing Congressman David Cicilline.

“My family’s roots run deep in this state and in this district,” Carlson said in a statement announcing his campaign. “I will work hard every day to deliver real and meaningful results for the people of this district, and to continue the great work that was done by our Congressman David Cicilline.”

Carlson grew up in Rhode Island, graduating from Toll Gate High School before attending Williams College and Harvard Law School. He clerked for Rhode Island U.S. Appeals Court Judge Bruce Selya.

After his clerkship, Carlson served as legislative director and chief counsel for Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy II, and later led the transition for Connecticut Congressman Jim Himes after his election to the House.

It's worth noting we still do not have a Republican candidate....

Eh, it's not really worth noting. The action is usually in the primaries here. And if Fung couldn't win the 2nd, it would need be a huge fluke for a Republican to be competitive.

Rhode Island is gonna do what Rhode Island does best; split the field so much that a mediocre at best candidate slips in on a plurality.

R.I. progressives assail Regunberg
as he runs for Congress

Six progressive former legislators and candidates are blasting J. Aaron Regunberg as he attempts to establish himself as the progressive choice for the First Congressional District seat that US Representative David N. Cicilline is vacating.

The clash represents the latest salvo in a “progressive civil war” that was evident in 2021 when Regunberg, a former state legislator, was among those criticizing the Rhode Island Political Cooperative for backing primary challengers to Democratic legislators who had advocated for progressive causes.

Now, Regunberg is receiving criticism in a joint statement from former state senators Cynthia Mendes and Jeanine Calkin, former state representative Moira Walsh, former state Senate candidate Jennifer Rourke, and former Providence City Council candidates Monica Huertas and Corey Jones.

We need runoffs or rank voting more than most other states.

Former Navy Intelligence Officer Walter Berbrick became the fifteenth Democrat to enter the race today.

Quote
Walter Berbrick, a former Navy intelligence officer – and professor in the War Gaming Department at the U.S. Naval War College until his recent resignation to try politics – has jumped into the crowded Democratic race to succeed U.S. Rep. David Cicilline in Congress.

A newcomer to the Rhode Island political scene, Berbrick, 38, of Middletown, became the 15th Democrat to enter the race when he announced his candidacy Friday.

Lincoln Town Councilor Pamela Azar has become the sixteenth Democrat to enter the race.

Quote
Lincoln Town Councilor Pamela Azar is running in the 1st Congressional District.

...
“I’m running to help people and be a red-tape cutter and negotiate and mediate with the other side of the aisle,” said Azar, who is a Democrat. “I don’t like this endless war. I want to represent the people who might be cynical about voting. People know I’m not afraid to stand up for them — I represent the silent majority.”

This is what happens when a state has only two congressional districts and neither of its senators are going anywhere anytime soon. Not many opportunities to move up the political ladder, and when one finally arrives, you kind of have to just go for it.
